Message from the Chairman
Dear Friends,
Just because the High Holidays season is over doesn't mean
that local Jewish life is taking a break.
There are literally dozens of events and programs to attend: from the Jewish meditation program at United
Synagogue of Hoboken, to the popular film series at Temple
Emanu-El of Bayonne,
to the monthly Jewish Salon in downtown Jersey City,
Hudson County supports a lively variety of
Jewish religious and cultural activity.
A full list of November activities is included in this newsletter and in
the calendar on the HudsonJewish homepage.
One important thing to mark on your calendars is the Third
Annual "Hanukkah on the Hudson"
to take place on Thursday, December 17 at 7PM.
The location this year will be the magnificent Temple Beth-El of Jersey City on Kennedy Boulevard,
not far from Journal Square. "Hanukkah on the Hudson"
has become a local tradition, and brings together Jews from every part of Hudson County
for an inclusive community-wide celebration.
Please plan to attend -- and bring your friends!
One final note: there
are numerous ways that you can become more involved in local Jewish life.
Whether it is by joining one of the county's dozen synagogues, or meeting
people through Hadassah or the National Council of Jewish Women, or becoming
one of the HudsonJewish volunteers, there is a place for you in our community. You will benefit and so will the new people
that you meet.
L'hitraot,
Adam S. Weiss, Chairman, HudsonJewish Adam@HudsonJewish.org

Michael Lenson Exhibit at the Jewish Museum of New Jersey
| |
|
Michael Lenson (1903-1971) gained

painters. Born in Russia, he emigrated to the United States
in 1911 and later won critical acclaim as a painter and muralist. During the Depression he became director of
WPA mural projects in New Jersey and his works
can still be seen in such places as Newark
City Hall and Weequahic High School.
The Jewish Museum of New Jersey is
sp onsoring an exhibition of Lenson's work through December 20. There will be a lecture and slide
presentation on November 15th at 1PM and a panel discussion on December 20th at 2PM
to be followed by a reception in recognition of Newark's City Murals Project.
The Jewish Museum of New Jersey is located in
the historic Congregation Ahavas Sholom, 145 Broadway in Newark and is open Sundays from 12-5PM. For more information contact Max Herman at

| Fifth Jewish Social/Intellectual Salon a Great Success. Sixth Planned for December 2nd | |
|
The HudsonJewish Salons are turning out to be a great success and a means of connecting with other people in an environment that is both social and intellectual. The October Salon addressed the topic of "Judaism and Social Consciousness" and all of the approximately 20 attendees had something to contribute.
The next Salon will address the topic, "The Jewish
Immigrant Experience: How Does It Affect
Jewish Identity Today?" Whether you are a 3rd or 1st generation American, the discussion is sure to be a lively one as
we explore what it means to be a "hyphenated-American" and how echoes
of "the old country" continue to impact our lives today.
The Salon takes place Wednesday, December 2, 7:30 PM at the CASE
Museum, 80 Grand Street corner of Washington in downtown Jersey City.
For more information contact HudsonJewish Trustee Raylie Dunkel: Raylie@HudsonJewish.org. A small donation of refreshments is always
appreciated but not required.
PS. Volunteers who wish to serve on the HudsonJewish Program Committee should also contact Raylie. |

Anti-Jewish Protest Ignored
| |
On Wednesday, October 28, a small group of protestors from the extremist Westboro
Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas picketed Hoboken
City Hall and United Synagogue of
Hoboken. Carrying
signs with slogans that do not bear repeating, the fringe group was by and
large ignored by USH members, who went about their business without incident.
In a follow-up message to the community, USH Rabbi Robert Scheinberg and
President Jim Weinstein contrasted the protest to the spirit of tolerance and
support expressed by the Hoboken community, and
invite all to participate in Hoboken's
Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, to be held on Sunday, November 22, 3-4PM at
USH.

Congregation B'nai Jacob Presents: "Jewish Life In France Today"
| |
On November 6 at 8PM, Congregation B'nai Jacob presents a
Shabbat program featuring David Rak, a native Parisian and former president of
the Union of Jewish Students of Northern France. David will address the paradox of France's
position as a multicultural society that has usually been protective of its
Jewish citizens, and the recent wave of anti-Semitic violence in that country.
In 2005 David brought 100 French students to New York to examine
Jewish life through the prism of American multiculturalism. He now lives in Jersey City with his wife Jen Fishbein, where
they are members of Congregation B'nai Jacob.
A brief Friday night service will be followed by oneg and David's talk
at 8:30PM. Location: Congregation B'nai Jacob, 176 West Side
Avenue in Jersey City. For more information contact the synagogue at
201-435-5725 or consult the CBJ website at www.bnaijacob.org. .

AMBER Alert Program Sponsored by United Synagogue of Hoboken
| |
United Synagogue of Hoboken is proud to
announce that it will be working in conjunction with AMBER Ready, Inc., experts
in the field of child safety and abduction education. AMBER Ready is an innovative wireless police notification system supported by a 24-hour emergency
response network staffed with highly trained active and
retired police officers. The system empowers parents with the tools necessary to significantly reduce the amount of time
between when a child is determined missing and when an alert is initiated by
local law enforcement. According to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National
Center for Missing and Exploited
Children, over 2,100 children are reported missing daily across the United States.
Because this is a problem of epidemic proportions, AMBER Ready is on the front
lines of protecting America's
children.
AMBER Ready offers parents in our community
a compact safety disk containing your child's digital photograph and digital fingerprints. This safety disk
is a unique product that parents retain in their possession. The disk
is being offered to parents and legal guardians for
the low price of $5.00. A portion of this charge will be returned to United
Synagogue of Hoboken.
Where: United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Ave. in
Hoboken
When: Tuesday evening, November 10, 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Sunday
morning, November 15, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
It will only take a few minutes. To make a reservation, or for more
information, call 201-659-0150. For more information on the AMBER Ready
program, contact AMBER Ready at 866-602-6237 or www.AmberReady.com. .

Volunteers Sought; Donations Appreciated
|
|
|
HudsonJewish is a 100% volunteer effort and relies on the
community for support. While donations
are always appreciated (see, Our Donors), the most important thing
that we need is people to help with specific tasks.
In particular, if you have skills in publicity or website development,
contact us at info@HudsonJewish.org. You will be joining a dedicated and capable
group of volunteers to serve a growing community that depends on HudsonJewish
for information and connection to other Jews in the vicinity. In addition, Board of Trustees elections will take place on December 7th; joining the Board is a great way to get involved in the community. (See above).
If you agree that HudsonJewish is doing good work for the community, you are invited to make a donation either by PayPal on the HudsonJewish website or by check to: HudsonJewish, PO Box 225, Jersey City, NJ 07303. HudsonJewish is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
