Monthly Message
Dear
Friends,
We were
all deeply concerned about the act of vandalism that took place last week at
the Bnos Sanz Girls' School in Union
City.
Although
authorities do not believe at this time that the arson constituted a hate crime,
the episode shows how vulnerable Jewish institutions are, even in the United States. We applaud the citizens and authorities in Union City for their
quick and committed response to this episode and are grateful that nobody was injured
and that property damage was minimal.
As demonstrated
by the responses we received to our email alert about this incident last week,
very few members of the broader Jewish community are even aware of the Bnos Sanz
school or of the small but vibrant Hassidic community that resides in Union
City, where the two most common local languages may well be Spanish and
Yiddish. Likewise, many members of the
Jewish community are almost wholly unaware of the many other local synagogues and of the
wide variety of Jewish religious, social and cultural groups in the area. HudsonJewish is working to remedy this through
such activities as our booth at the Hoboken Street Fair this Sunday, our
informative website, and this newsletter.
We are doing our best to live up to our motto, "HudsonJewish: Connecting Our Community."
HudsonJewish
invites you to visit all of our local Jewish institutions, many of which are
stunning architectural achievements and living symbols of the illustrious
history of Jewish life in Hudson
County. Visits to Congregation Mount Sinai in Jersey City Heights,
Temple Emanu-el
in Bayonne, Temple
Beth-El on Kennedy Boulevard, Temple Israel
Community Center in Cliffside
Park, and Congregation B'nai Jacob on Jersey City's West Side are as inspiring as they are informative. Each of these synagogue communities is unique;
all are welcoming, and hold fascinating and fun events. Most are easily accessible by Light Rail
and/or have reasonable amounts of parking.

Perhaps
the most significant local event of the year is the Hoboken Arts & Music
Festival, to take place this Sunday May 3rd. The United Synagogue of Hoboken, Chabad of
Hoboken and HudsonJewish will all have booths at the fair, so make sure to stop
by to meet other local Jewish people and learn more about the community.
Thank you for being part of our community! - Matt
Meistrich, HudsonJewish Trustee
PS. HudsonJewish extends its best wishes for a
quick recovery from surgery to Rabbi Shammai Engelmayer of Temple Israel
Community Center in Cliffside
Park. Rabbi Engelmayer has
been a strong supporter of Jewish communal unity in general and of HudsonJewish in particular.
