Message from the Chairman

Dear Friends,

January and February of 2009 are filled with events in the reviving Jewish community of Hudson County.  If you live in the area I'd like to encourage you to attend one special one this weekend:  "Hanukkah on the Hudson!", this Sunday December 28, 2-5PM at the Bayonne JCC.  (Childrens activities begin at 1PM).

Now in its second year, Hanukkah on the Hudson is the first and only truly community-wide Jewish celebration in Hudson County, and it is designed specifically to connect our community--especially by introducing people who are new in the area.

From the northern tip of North Bergen, through the booming new communities of Hoboken and downtown Jersey City, to the southern tip of Bayonne, to as far west as Newark, Hanukkah on the Hudson attracts a wide variety of people -- long-time residents and newcomers, families, children and singles.  Last year's attendance -- perhaps 350 people -- demonstrated conclusively that an urban Jewish revival is underway in our area.

Hanukkah on the Hudson will take place on the last night of Hanukkah:  this Sunday, December 28, 2008.  Light refreshments will be served and entertainment will include Jewish music and Israeli dancing.  Honorees from eight local synagogues will kindle the Hanukkah lights.

Hanukkah on the Hudson will be hosted by the Bayonne JCC, 1050 Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne.  For more information call Caren at:  201-436-6900 or contact HudsonJewish Secretary Michelle Levine: Secretary@HudsonJewish.org.

Tickets are: adults $12 in advance ($15 at the door); children $8 in advance ($10 at the door).  Children under 2 free. You can sign up through PayPal directly on our website at www.HudsonJewish.org.

Several other upcoming events also deserve special attention:
All of these events are community-oriented, and all are invited!  More information is available on the HudsonJewish website and will be published in upcoming issues of The Jewish State.

In closing, I and the other HudsonJewish volunteers look forward to seeing you all in the coming weeks and months.  If you have any questions about the community, please reach out to us at: Info@HudsonJewish.org.

Chag Sameach,
Adam S. Weiss
Chairman, HudsonJewish

To post your own organization's events to the HudsonJewish  community calendar, email Honorary Trustee Jessica Lemmon (Jessica@HudsonJewish.org) for a username and password.  Posting events is the best way to avoid scheduling conflicts and broadcast your events (and existence) to the community.  Dates/times/locations may change, so check the online calendar for updates.  Post by the 25th of the prior month for inclusion.  We try to include selected events for the six weeks following publication, on or around the first of each month.

Saturday night, January 24:  Following a brief Havdalah service, Temple Beth-El will host a Jazz Jam, featuring "The Larry Banks Trio", led by noted local musician Larry Banks.  Says Beth-El Board member (and HudsonJewish volunteer) Joshua Parkhurst, "People don't realize how many prominent musicians live in Jersey City, and Beth-El is pleased to showcase them for the whole community."  If you have not visited Beth-El's magnificent sanctuary on Kennedy Boulevard just north of Communipaw, this event would be an ideal occasion to do so, and to meet the welcoming congregation led by Rabbi Kenneth Brickman.
