Message from the Chairman
Dear Friends,
The incredible turnout at last month's Hoboken Street Fair reminded me of the importance of "just being there." Literally hundreds of people stopped by the HudsonJewish booth to find out more about the local Jewish community. Many thanks to the HudsonJewish volunteers who devoted their time and energy to welcome visitors and share knowledge!
One of the most common questions we heard was, "How can I get involved?" The best place to start is the HudsonJewish website, www.HudsonJewish.org, which provides information about local Jewish organizations and lists the people to contact to learn more. If you have an idea for something that you don't see on the website, contact us at: Info@HudsonJewish.org.
This month's calendar is filled with opportunities to connect with the community. Here are a few:
- Coffee for new and prospective members of United Synagogue of Hoboken (Sunday, June 1)
- Congregation Mount Sinai's Centennial Gala (June 15)
- Congregation B'nai Jacob's all-community musical Shabbat dinner (June 20)
- Wine tasting in downtown Jersey City (June 26)
- Informal meet-and-greet in Hoboken (June 30)
Come meet people at any of these events -- whatever your Jewish background or interests may be, there is a place for you in our community! One final reminder: this Friday, May 30, HudsonJewish Trustee Raylie Dunkel hosts a pot-luck Shabbat dinner and chavurah-style service at her home in Jersey City. Visit the HudsonJewish calendar for more details, and make sure to RSVP ASAP! Information available at: Paulus Hook Pot Luck Shabbat.
Many thanks to the volunteers and contributors who are making HudsonJewish possible.

Hundreds of people visited the HudsonJewish booth at the Hoboken Street Fair on Sunday, May 4th. (Visitors included United States Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg). Many thanks to all of the volunteers who answered questions and welcomed new people to the community!
Several other local Jewish organizations were represented at the street fair: United Synagogue of Hoboken, National Council of Jewish Women, Jewish Young Adults of Hoboken, and Chabad Lubavitch, just to name a few. Photos are available on the HudsonJewish website: HudsonJewish - Photos.
The next Hoboken Street Fair will be on Sunday, September 28. If you would like to volunteer at the HudsonJewish booth, contact HudsonJewish Board Secretary Michelle Levine: Michelle@HudsonJewish.org. |
100 Years of Jewish Life -- Mount Sinai's Centennial
|
|
Congregation Mount Sinai, the oldest continuously-operating congregation in Jersey City, celebrates the 100th anniversary of its historic synagogue building with a concert on June 15, 2008 from 4-7PM, at 128 Sherman Avenue in Jersey City Heights. The entire community is invited to share the occasion.
"Local Jewish life in Hudson County is now emerging from 40 years in the wilderness, so what better place to celebrate than at Mount Sinai?" asks HudsonJewish Vice Chairman Dr. Neil Davis, a member of Mount Sinai and Secretary of its Board.
Ann Blaustein, President Emerita and long-time Jewish community activist, notes that Congregation Mount Sinai represents the historical continuity of Jewish life in the area. "I started out being the youngest, and now I'm the oldest," she told the Jewish Standard, in an article that is reposted to the HudsonJewish website: "Jersey City Shul Optimistic About the Next 100 Years!"
Pictured here with a photo from Mount Sinai's 20th Jubilee Banquet (1927), Ann is a well-known figure in local Jewish affairs. She and her husband Mordechai "Muttsie" Blaustein are regular fixtures at Mount Sinai, where as the congregation's senior members they are welcoming a new generation to the community. Tickets
for the concert, dinner, and dessert are $54. Tickets for the concert
only are $36. Payment can be made by check, through PayPal at the synagogue website, www.mtsinai.net, or at the door. Angela Oren, a
Rumanian-Jewish artist, will perform Israeli music with her band, accompanied by Mount Sinai member, violinist Joe Alvarado.
