Old England vs. Old India
A Unique Cricket Match at Sheffield Park on
17th July 2011
Organised by the Armadillos Cricket Club in conjunction
with the National Trust
On Sunday 17th July, a unique Cricket match will take place on the historic and scenic
Cricket ground at Sheffield Park which is next to the famous National Trust Garden. The
competing teams are made up of former internationals from England and India, to
coincide with the imminent Test series between the two countries.
With India's victory in the World Cup this year, we are fortunate that the Indian team will
include players from the 1983 World Cup winning team at Lord's including Man of the
Match Mohinder Amarnath. The team will be captained by Dilip Vengsarkar, who
remains the only touring batsman to score three consecutive Test centuries at Lord's. Ten of
the Indian team will be coming from India to be joined by left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi
who lives in England. Old England will be captained by John Lever and will include the
wonderfully entertaining batsman Derek Randall and off-spinner John Emburey. The
managers for the teams are two famous wicket-keeper/batsmen: Farokh Engineer of India
and Lancashire, and Jim Parks of England and Sussex.
The match commemorates the 125th anniversary of the match in 1886 on the ground
between Lord Sheffield's XI and the "Old Parsees", the first Indian team to tour England.
Some of the catering on the day will be provided by another famous Parsee, Cyrus Todiwala. His team will provide an
outlet in the food village (as they do at Lord's) for public sales of his wonderful
food. Cyrus will also look after corporate hospitality.
The ground opens at 12 noon and the match begins at 2pm. The day will be an excellent occasion for the whole family as tickets will include free entry to the Sheffield Park Garden.
This is a rare opportunity to see outstanding players from an earlier era close-up. There
will be a lucky programme and raffle prizes, together with plenty of time for autograph
hunters not to be disappointed. Spectators will be kept fully informed and entertained by
the public address system with famous guest speakers.
Adult tickets are £10 each and there will be discounted family and children's tickets
available. For those interested in hospitality, tickets will be £75.00 each and include a
magnificent lunch in a seating area near the players.
Tickets are available through the National Trust by ringing 01825 790231.
