Dear MK Mueller, I'm writing to let you know how much your book has changed my life. A tornado tore through my town on May 22, 2011 and took the lives of two dear students along with destroying my school and taking thousands of lives.
Fifty-five days after the tornado, our school re-opened in separate buildings. Shortly after school started, I received an email that MK Mueller was coming to speak on Oct. 28. I ordered her book to be prepared for her workshop.
As I began to read 8 to Great, I realized my life was about to change. By page six, The Power Pyramid, I began to change my thinking. I am overweight, but now, in just one week, I have lost five pounds.
Then, beginning on September 26, 2011, I started writing down 3 things I was thankful for every morning. I began to think about the little things I took for granted: that the school door was unlocked when my hands were full, an uninterrupted morning before work, or the copier open every time I needed a copy. I started living "95" and wanted to share it with everyone who would listen.
A co-worker asked why I was all of a sudden so happy. I simply said, "I'm choosing to 95 it." If I got discouraged, I picked up 8 to Great and read a few more pages.
The book has made such a difference in my life that I wanted to share it with my students. I logged onto the 8 to Great website and was AMAZED to see the student curriculum, and sample lessons. The next day I wrote "GRATITUDE" on the board and asked students to write about at least three things they were grateful for. I gave them about 10 minutes.
Typically, anytime there is "downtime" in my classroom, my ED/BD (Emotionally Disturbed / Behavior Disorder) students begin to be disruptive. This was the first time in two years this group of students was engaged in the lesson and couldn't wait for more. All 16 students were connected to the information and didn't even notice the bell had rung. I had two students ask to stay and finish the lesson. In just one 8 to Great lesson, I had more attention and focus from my students than I'd had in two years.
I purchased another book for my 16-year-old daughter and gave it to her four days ago. I've seen more healing and growth in those four days than in the past four months. Adison can't wait to get home so we can read a section of 8 to Great together, discuss what it means to each of us, and how we are going to put it into practice the following day. Now I get e-mails from her during the day, "Are you 95ing?" or "I am grateful to have my favorite pencil to complete my homework in this hour."
My students are in desperate need of this material and message. I know the 8 to Great process will have a major positive impact on Joplin beginning with my students and rippling out across this devastated town. I don't have funding right now because every penny has gone into rebuilding our lives, but with books and scholarships, I know it will make a difference in every student's life. Thank you for any help you can offer.
