As we ended our 30- minute 8 to Great overview, the new principal had tears in her eyes. "This program gives students hope...that's exactly what our kids need."
We couldn't have said it better.
In this monthly newsletter, we're announcing our first ever two-day training in Omaha during the Holidays so no school time is lost. We are also premiering our new High-Ways Helpers - ideas from around the world for teaching the High-Ways.

| 7th Graders Celebrate Risk Taking with High-Way 2, Activity 11 |

 I invited my 7th grade 8 to Great class to take part in the first ever Adams Central 2-Minute Talent Show. There were 14 entries. It was a blast! One boy stood in front of the class not smiling for two minutes. Try it, it is not easy.
A girl showed pet tricks. No, she didn't bring in her dog. Instead she had another student dress up as her dog and then perform the tricks. She even brought in vanilla wafers for the doggie treats!
But here was the best one: One of the boys, who has Tourettes Syndrome and is very shy decided to do a commercial for his talent. I was amazed. Here is what his commercial said:

| High-Ways Helpers for the Classroom |
High-Way 4
"Feel All Your Feelings" has been called "the most important" High-Way and quite often, "The most difficult to teach." From two innov8tive teachers, here's a tool to warm students up to this powerful High-Way.
Deb Waskowiak, youth minister at St. Bernard's in Omaha, created a "Feel All Your Feelings" Beach Ball with her partner Brock Fairbrother. The interaction it generated was fantastic. The lesson? We all feel all our feelings, so why not admit it? 
Purchase a blow-up beach ball at the store and write the names of feelings on it with permanent marker. Then, students who want to participate stand. The rule is, when you catch the ball, whatever word your left thumb lands on is the feeling you share about. "When was a time you felt that way?" Remind them that feelings are neither good nor bad, they just are.
The facilitator, as always, shares first, and then throws the ball to someone standing. After they share a time they felt that way and throw it to someone else, they sit. Continue until everyone standing has had a chance to share a feeling experience.

Teachers around the country are singing the praises of www.Youtube.com for helping students understand the High-Ways. Two of MK's favorites for
"Full Responsibility" are "Maybe" - a Nike spot with Michael Jordan and
"Blame" from Rocky Balboa (thanks to Master Trainer Jeff Hofeldt for finding it).
High-Way Songs for High-Ways 2 and 4
Jump Rope by Blue October is one of the most contagiously UP songs around. It helps teach the Road to Success and Feel All Your Feelings. Some of our awesome trainers from Michigan are using it for when kids walk into the classroom to set an UPbeat mood!
