Problem solved: "I never know if students are paying attention..."

MK here. I recently received a letter from an 8 to Great teacher who wasn't sure if her students were connecting with the lifechanging concepts she was sharing. I had this suggestion and a letter from a student:

Dear Trainer, check to see if you're "trying too hard." One of my mottos has always been, "Never work harder than your audience." I love to give them Full Responsibilty by reminding students of the following:

"Please let me remind you that my most important job is not to teach you the High-Ways of 8 to Great. Can anyone guess what my most important job is?"  A student usually guesses the answer - It's to feel good (or it's to stay at 95). "That's correct. Now if I have to convince all of you that this is important in order for me to feel good, there's a good chance I won't feel good, and as we know when we feel good... ("good things happen").  So it's absolutely all right if you do not agree with these concepts. If you don't learn them here, you'll learn them from life. I won't take your lack of enthusiasm personally. I just wanted you to know."

Finally, Dear One, keep having them journal for 2-3 minutes, and when a student says they "loved it" or used a High-Way in their lives, read that comment aloud to the class the following session. Let me close with a letter I received recently from a young woman who sat in the back row of a 500-person Youth Rally. We never know who's really taking it all in!

Hello,
I just felt like i should write to you because I wasn't brave enough to speak or volunteering. I would have but I am the shy girl who sits in the back seeming to not be paying attention, but i was completely. You never once lost my attention. I came there thinking that this was going to be one of those normal speeches teens here, not that interesting or just not able to keep your attention. You were GREAT! I am going to follow a morning routine of waking up, looking around and thinking about what I would like to be grateful for that morning, and every morning after i think about what i am grateful for i am going to write them in a notebook i have hanging on my door (mainly hanging on my door so i don't forget to do it, i definitely don't want to). I think this will make my  days greater and brighter. Thank you for showing me ways to keep my day great!

Thanks a lot,
Siena
High-Way 5 Works!  A Testimonial from a Coach

MK,
I want to thank you for the listening skills you teach in High-Way 5.  I used the AVA formula the other day and it worked wonders with two very angry parents!

Basically I did what you said and let them talk.  When they got into the room they were on the attack because they feel I don't play their daughter enough. I just kept breathing deeply and let them vent.  I practiced the AVA formula with "Go on... I see that you are upset"  Eventually they grew tired of being angry when they saw that I wasn't going to engage them in a fight.  I was open and honest about why she wasn't playing.  I gave specific details, but I also talked about their daughter's good character traits which helped.

Even though I hated to admit it, the Father was right about a few things and I told him "You are absolutely right"  which kind of put him into shock. All in all we came up with a plan that we could all live with and we all went home happy.

I remember reading somewhere recently that when a parent is angry with you that you have to remember that they are not necessarily AGAINST you but FOR their child. That helped a ton when they were on the attack.

MK, until I went to the "8 to Great" training weekend, I did exactly what you said not to do -  throwing around facts and not listening to the parents. You are right, they just want to be heard and once they were heard they were ready to fix the problem.  Thank you so much!!!

The Power of the Poster: High-Way Hallways!

Congratulations to Cody-Kilgore High School for this month's 8 to Greatest IdeaPrincipal KateFullerton and her
awesome team of teachers decided to have a competition and assigned each of the classes a High-Way for their Hallway. The winning class invited fellow students to take a present day photo and "image" their dream over it, creating a wall of dreams for High-Way 1.
