Parent Corner

Pinterest is a great way to find and share ideas. I've found awesome recipes, craft projects, activities to do with my kids, and much more! After you sign up, you can search for ideas on other boards and "pin" them to your own to find them easily. You can also pin things you come across online. I highly recommend trying it out!
Greetings!

We're near the end .... Tickets, costumes and peek week are just around the corner!  The countdown has begun.  After April vacation, the season flies by.  We know that with the better weather, motivation to come to class will wane ... but we keep classes fun (the more the kids practice at home, the more time for using our new skills in new ways!).  We are so excited to see everyone on stage!

Fall schedules are in your files (and online) - check if you haven't already!  Early registration has begun for fall classes (savings of $25 if registered BEFORE MAY 15th).  If you have any questions regarding scheduling or levels, please let me know.  I may have circled the wrong choices inadvertently - please ask if you have questions!

If you are interested in summer programs, please register ASAP so I know how to plan my summer vacation and purchase necessary supplies.  Many people wait until the last minute - when I'm on vacation with my family.  I would love to have everything in place before the recital so I can prepare in advance rather than waiting until the last minute.  Remember - we offer many financial incentives which ease summer payments for families. I am very flexible with summer programs and payments as I know that vacations and camps take priority.  Take advantage of our deferred payments and installment plans! Register today - deposits will not be processed until June 1st.

Fall 2012 Class Schedule

Fall Schedules in your Family Files
Please check out your files for the fall 2012 dance schedules.  Should you have any questions, please email me. Note that there is a $25 discount offer on registration that expires on May 15th (no exceptions).  Even if you are unsure of what exact classes you will be taking, register for at least one before May 15th to save $25.
Backstage Volunteers
Backstage volunteers are vital for a smooth dress rehearsal and show.  Younger classes need mother helpers to tend to the children (keep them busy, change costumes & accessories, bathroom breaks, etc.).  The faculty will not be there to take care of the children as we are needed onstage and in the audience.  Please do your share and volunteer to help your child's class.  Every year the same people volunteer and it would be great if they could have a break.  Backstage moms get to watch the performance from the stage wings and do NOT need a recital ticket.  Please sign up on the bulletin board!  Thank you in advance for helping us out!
Ticket Sales
Sunday, May 6, 2012 - 10am-noon

By attending the ticket sale on May 6th, you can choose your own seats.

  • Ticket prices: Tickets are discounted to $25.00 each if purchased BEFORE June 2nd.  On June 2nd and later, the ticket price reverts to the regular price of $27.00 each.  Tickets are the same price for adults & children.
  • Tickets are reserved seats and they will go on sale on a first come-first served basis.
  • Tickets will be sold on Sunday, May 6th from 10am until noon @ the studio.
  • Tickets must be paid for by money order or cash - no personal checks or credit cards accepted for ticket sales (due to bounced checks and declined credit cards in the past).
  • Tickets may not be purchased until ALL tuition and costume balances are paid in full.
  • Tickets are NON-refundable and NOT exchangeable.  We are not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen tickets.
  • If you can't attend May 6th:  Please fill out the ticket order forms at the studio.  Enclose slip and cash or money order in an envelope in the payment box by the office door.  Tickets will be in your file the following week.  Tickets will not be sold during class - we need to cater to your child's class.  Note that ticket slips will be filled at the end of the ticket session on May 6th - priority is given to those in attendance.

We hope you invite a group of family and friends so we have a full house for our performance.  The dancers work hard all year long and there is some incredible talent in the show.  We love a great audience so invite everyone!!!

Costumes and Parent Peek Week
May 7-12 2012

Costumes- Recital costumes will NOT be distributed until ALL tuition and costume balances are paid in full for this dance season.  We appreciate your understanding with regard to this policy.  While we don't want anybody to feel neglected with regard to costumes, we must adhere to this policy for financial reasons. We will be distributing costumes the week of May 7, 2012 - during Parent Peek Week.

Parent Peek Week - Parents are invited to watch class in the dance studio, but please leave siblings at home so there are fewer distractions.  Parent participation will help expedite the process of trying on costumes and save time with explaining costume details.  And you will watch the dancers' perform in costume for the first time!

Please note that all of the teachers will invite parents (sometimes weekly - just ask ...) in the studio at the end of the classes this time of year to preview the dances.  We welcome you - you can see how the dances progress weekly.

DVD Orders

You may still order DVDs of the show - price is $37 and checks should be made payable to Bill Magro (I only accept payments to the studio through April 15th - I will still collect checks, coordinate paperwork and prepare mailing labels, however the check should be made payable to Bill Magro) from this point on.  DVDS are a great keepsake of the show - and a nice diversion on a rainy day!  Please note that video-recording is strictly prohibited at both dress rehearsal and the show.

Audience and Recital Etiquette

We offer these insights into audience etiquette so that everyone may enjoy the show and things run smoothly.

Be on time

It is very important to arrive on time (costume on but completely covered with Dad's shirt or bathrobe, makeup applied and hair done)for the photo shoot, dress rehearsal and the show.  It may mean leaving work early that day to allow for travel time.  We schedule everything knowing that it is a school night for the photo shoot and rehearsal (many local dance studios run their rehearsals through midnight - no kidding!).  Likewise, at dress rehearsal we must be out of the building by a certain time and, therefore, need every precious minute onstage devoted to the children.

  • Photo shoot times are in your packet - be at least 20 minutes early!!!!!  We always run ahead of schedule for group photos. If you are running late - call us!  If you are not coming, please tell the teacher in May when she is planning photo poses.
  • Dress Rehearsal call times:
    • 3:30pm for int/adv levels (to set up costumes, warm-up, help with class assignments and stage prep)
    • 4:15pm for everyone else
    • If you are in act 2 only, please arrive by 6:30pm (dressed and ready to go) - we rehearse the finale at intermission during the dress rehearsal so you need to arrive in time for that
  • Show call times:
    • 11am for int/adv levels (warmup in theatre @ 11:20am)
    • 12:15pm for everyone else
    • Dads will meet at noon on the day of the show on stage (please don't be late or you miss your only run-through!).
    • If  you are in act 2 only - you still need to arrive by 12:30pm at the latest (get costumes ready backstage and settle in) - we have a registration station to be sure everybody has arrived - we don't want/need to panic when we in preparations to begin the show.

Prompt attendance will ensure that the photo shoot, show and rehearsal run efficiently.

Out of respect for the dancers, the audience members, and staff, we ask that you and your guests cooperate with the following:

  • Please refrain from standing & entering & exiting the auditorium during a dance (wait until the applause after a dance).  Not only does it distract the dancers, but it is rude for the audience members around you.  You never know if someone around you has a family member in that dance.
  • Please stay throughout the entire show - 1) it's very frustrating to have half an audience at the end of the show, 2) the finale is run at the end of the show - that's your child's final bow.  Also, awards are presented at the end of the show.
  • Students are to remain with the backstage mother during the entire show unless otherwise notified.  You may not go backstage after your child's dance to retrieve them and bring them into the audience.  The backstage helper is responsible for the students.  Absolutely no parents allowed backstage unless they are volunteers.
  • Video-recording is strictly prohibited at both dress rehearsal and the performance.
  • No flash photography allowed.
  • Please turn cell phones & beepers to silent mode.
  • No food or drink allowed in the theatre.
The more you applaud, the better the dancers perform.  Please be mindful of this during the 2nd act as well.

Summer Dance Programs
Register today - deposits and/or payments won't be processed until June 1st.  Take advantage of our 4 month installment plan!

Note: Intermediate and advanced level dancers should take advantage of the short summer session to retain class placement in the fall. In traditional school, kids lose approximately two months of material during summer months.  The same applies to dance - dancers lose valuable technique over the summer and need to regain what they have mastered in the spring which can take months. We offer the most popular classes during the summer (contemporary, hip hop, tap and yoga) and encourage everyone to stay involved in dance to further individual growth and ease the transition back into fall dance classes. There are only 5 weeks of classes and tuition can be prorated for vacations.

  • Kiddie (age 4-7 approx) - 9am-noon
  • Junior dancers (age 7-10 approx) - noon to 4 pm

These summer dance sessions were created to provide an additional performance opportunity for dancers at the holidays - something different than the many local versions of the Nutcracker and something that gives back to the community. Most dancers who begin in the Kiddie Dance program continue with the program and become members of the Dance Expressions Ensemble (DEE). The DEE performs exclusively for community charitable events including Project Santa every year. Note that there are no auditions required to be a DEE member. Participants in the above summer sessions may perform in our annual (free) Happy Holidays Concert in December which benefits area food pantries and the Toys for Tots campaign. Prior dance experience is necessary. Keeping summer vacations in mind, each program meets one week only from Monday to Thursday (DEE meets M-F with a sleepover and So You Think You Can Dance show on Thursday evening). The Kiddie and Junior sessions have a theme with corresponding arts & crafts projects. Past themes have included Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Carnival, and Circus - this year it will be HOLIDAYS. We provide FREE rehearsals in the fall (schedule is approximately every other Friday beginning at the end of September, except the DEE who will have one additional Friday rehearsal before classes start in September) to prepare for the show. Why participate? Dancer's benefits:
  • additional performance opportunity beyond the annual year-end show
  • learn new repertoire which applies techniques and skills - dancers advance more quickly
  • camaraderie, team work, cooperation
  • free fall rehearsals
  • give back to the community
Summer schedule includes contemporary, hip hop, tap, and yoga classes. Classes can be prorated for vacations.
The Dance Teacher Prep Course is for dedicated dancers aspiring to assist with classes and/or teach dance in the future.
