Dancers of the Month
Jillian Grant
Keiko Yuasa
Jillian is a DEE member and takes the Ballet Int. 1 as well as the Tap 3 and Tap Int. 2 classes. Jillian is an incredibly hard worker and always gives her all in class. With the addition of a second tap class this year, she has been making outstanding improvements in her rhythms, clarity, speed, and retention. She has also been making great progress with her tap flash steps.
This is Keiko's 5th year of dancing (if memory serves me correctly). She takes the beginning level ballet and tap classes. She has made great progress in her execution and speed in tap and her technique in ballet. She is always a joy in class and brings great energy and a smile to the room. It has been a pleasure watching her grow!
Congratulations, Jillian and Keiko!

Parent Corner
There is a great app for the iPhone called Key Ring. It saves all of your loyalty cards so you only need to scan the phone at the counter when checking out. I definitely recommend using it - it's such a timesaver!

Excel in Motion
It was so great seeing DEU dancers challenge themselves at Excel in Motion in January. Danielle Walsh, Amanda Untracht, Caitlin Geary and Miss Lauren took dance classes with So You Think You Can Dance stars including tWitch (all star seasons 7 and 8), Kent Boyd (runner-up season 7), Katee Shean (female winner of season 4), Alex Wong (a fan favorite from season 7), Kathryn McCormick (season 6 and star of Step Up 4 in theaters this summer), and Ellenore Scott (season 6). The girls also took class with Courtney Ortiz (top 160 finalist for SYTYCD), and Brian Henninger. We look forward to attending next year - hopefully more dancers will join us!

Tap2You
March 4, 2012 - Lowell Memorial Auditorium
Aaron Tolson (from Manchester, NH) and Derrick K. Grant (from Boston, MA) are bring a tap competition and convention to Lowell, MA on Sunday March 4th. There are several classes as well as a showcase at 6:30pm. Classes take place at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium:
- 12:00-1:00pm - intermediate
- 1:00-2:00pm - intermediate
- 2:00-3:00pm - intermediate
- 3:00-4:00pm - advanced
- 4:00-5:00pm - advanced
- 5:00-6:00pm - advanced
This is another great opportunity to take some master classes with experts in the field - and no travel expenses (Lowell!!!). I always encourage my dancers to take additional classes when the opportunities arise - especially from professionals. I have seen Aaron's tap ensemble (mostly kids/teens) perform on a couple of occasions and was VERY impressed - he is talented as are his dancers and he has such a great rapport with his troupe. I saw Derrick perform in Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk - Savion Glover's tap Broadway sensation - another talented tapper.
If you are interested, let me know. I will be watching and/or taking classes! Dedicated tappers - don't miss this opportunity!

Interested in dancing in NYC this summer?
Int/Adv Dancers - Are you interested in going to NYC for a day/weekend this summer? There is a NYC dance workshop package that looks like would be a lot of fun - and a great opportunity! There are three weekends available: June 23-24, June 30-July 1, or July 7-8. There is an option to do either the Saturday class, the Sunday, or both.
Saturday - "Broadway Bound Experience" - $119 per dancer
- Meet-the-Artist Broadway Jazz Workshop - This is a 2-hour program where dancers can take class and interact with a leading dancer from a current Broadway show.
- The Business of Show Business - This is a 1-hour session that features a private performance, backstage anecdotes, memorable career moments, and more.
Sunday - "A Day in the Life of a Professional Dancer" - $139 per dancer
- This is a full day of dance where we can study with 5 of New York's most accomplished artists. Classes would include: tap with a Rockette, ballet with a principal artist from NYC Ballet, jazz with a principle Broadway dancer, jazz with a principle Alvin Ailey dancer, and hip hop with a Monster.
Both Saturday and Sunday - $208 per dancer
This would be a great opportunity - especially since we missed out on going to NYC December due to scheduling. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and which dates you would be available.

Summer Dance Programs
Summer schedules are nearly ready - more details to follow next month. Information below is already set!
July 9-12, 2012 - Kiddie & Junior Dancers
- Kiddie (age 4-7 approx) - 9am-noon
- Junior dancers (age 7-10 approx) - noon to 4 pm
July 23-27, 2012 - Dance Expressions Ensemble (age 10+)
These summer dance sessions were created to provide an additional performance opportunity for dancers at the holidays - something different than the many local versions of the Nutcracker and something that gives back to the community. Most dancers who begin in the Kiddie Dance program continue with the program and become members of the Dance Expressions Ensemble (DEE). The DEE performs exclusively for community charitable events including Project Santa every year. Note that there are no auditions required to be a DEE member. Participants in the above summer sessions may perform in our annual (free) Happy Holidays Concert in December which benefits area food pantries and the Toys for Tots campaign. Prior dance experience is necessary. Keeping summer vacations in mind, each program meets one week only from Monday to Thursday (DEE meets M-F with a sleepover and So You Think You Can Dance show on Thursday evening). The Kiddie and Junior sessions have a theme with corresponding art & craft projects. Past themes have included Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Carnival, and Circus - this year it will be HOLIDAYS. We provide FREE rehearsals in the fall (schedule is approximately every other Friday beginning at the end of September, except the DEE who will have one additional Friday rehearsal before classes start in September) to prepare for the show. Why participate? Dancer's benefits:
- additional performance opportunity beyond the annual year-end show
- learn new repertoire which applies techniques and skills - dancers advance more quickly
- camaraderie, team work, cooperation
- free fall rehearsals
- give back to the community
Teen/Adult Summer Dance - 5 weeks - Tuesdays begin July 10th
Summer schedule includes contemporary, hip hop, adult tap, and yoga classes. Classes can be prorated for vacations. Dance Teacher Prep Course (year 3) - July 23-25
The Dance Teacher Prep Course is for dedicated dancers aspiring to assist with classes and/or teach dance in the future. |
