GOAL

9/9/11 Update, ACTION NEEDED.

GOAL's bill "An Act Repealing the Ban on Modern Sporting Arms" filed by Representative George Peterson has seen some movement. On September 1, 2011 the bill was sent to the Committee on House Rules. This is a normal, but important step that takes place with bills that are "late filed" (after the legislative year has started.) The legislation still does not have an official number and thus will remain under a docket number, House Docket 3995.

The docket will not receive a bill number until it is released by the committee.

GOAL would urge all of our members to please contact the members of House Committee on Rules and ask them to release the docket as a bill as soon as possible.

This legislation is a very crucial step forward in reforming the draconian Massachusetts gun laws that have done nothing to better public safety.

Click here to view the bill and a list of legislators that have signed on to the bill. Please take a moment and send a note thanks to your legislator if they signed on as a co-sponsor.

Boston City Council Holds Gun Knife Control Hearing

On Thursday, September 08, 2011 the Public Safety Committee of the Boston City Council held a public hearing concerning the potential licensing of businesses that sell knives.

According to the supporters of the proposed license the action is needed as a means to address the ever increasing knife violence in Boston. The knife hearing today was reminiscent of the infamous gun control hearings back in the 90s. One would have sworn they were transported back in time, or perhaps to a parallel universe. To the right were politicians firm in their conviction that action must be taken. To the left were the grieving parents and their genuine heart wrenching stories of lost loved ones. In the middle were public safety officials looking trapped, but offering supportive testimony for the proposal. The only difference between this hearing and the many that took place a decade ago was that the word "guns" was replaced with knives".

MA DFW Has Range Grants Available
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) receives over $2.3 million annually in reimbursement grants pursuant to the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 (commonly referred to as the Pittman-Robertson Act.) Monies available for reimbursement are derived from federal excise taxes on sporting arms, ammunition, and equipment paid by licensed hunters and shooters. The act authorizes, allows, and encourages the expenditure of such federal reimbursement grants for wildlife-associated outdoor recreation projects, including hunter education programs, and the construction, operation, and maintenance of public target and shooting ranges.
