Senator Brewer Comes Through for Sportsmen Again

Senator Stephen Brewer, long time friend of the gun owners and sportsmen of the Commonwealth and now Senate Chair of Ways & Means, has come through again. In the recent budget deliberations in the Senate, the Senator was successful in securing two outside sections that will greatly help our youth activities.

Jim Wallace and Senator Brewer

The first section granted free freshwater fishing licenses to anyone under 18 years old. The second section amended the laws regarding FID Cards by reducing the application fee for anyone under the age of 18 from $100 to $25.

GOAL had made it one of our priorities to reduce or eliminate this fee for youth FID Cards. In the same budget deliberations the Senator was able to secure a much needed level of funding for the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. " I am thrilled that we are able to preserve funding that keeps people off the couch and outside," said Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. "Show me a kid who is out hunting and fishing and I'll show you a kid who is not out doing crack cocaine. In a time when we are coming out of a global recession these programs provide families and communities with the resources to stay local and enjoy their communities and nature."

On behalf of the gun owners and sportsmen/women of the Commonwealth we would like to thank Senator Brewer for his continued efforts and support of the sporting community and youth activities.

Warning; Anti-2A Survey of Firearms Dealers Under Way!

If you are a federally licensed dealer in firearms
, you may recently have received a survey questionnaire from gun control supporter Dr. Garen Wintemute, of the University of California, Davis.

The survey asks dealers questions about their business, their reasons for being in the business, their support for gun control, and their customers.

Why is Dr.Wintemute sending the survey? Consider the source. Over the years, he has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from anti-gun organizations to conduct "studies" designed to promote gun control. Several of these so-called "studies" have tried to blame legal firearms dealers for the illegal use of guns, and proposed further restrictions on dealers' ability to conduct business. (You can see a list of past studies on his website, at http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/vprp/publications/

We recommend that you do not respond to the survey, for two reasons. First, many of the questions in the survey are written so that Dr. Wintemute will be able to claim that at least some dealers support one or another form of gun control, or that they report the occurrence of situations that, Dr. Wintemute will likely claim, prove the need for restrictions on dealers and their customers. Second, participating in the survey in any way would give Dr. Wintemute credibility in the eyes of the anti-gun organizations that fund his efforts, which would only increase his chance of obtaining more money for more anti-gun research.

Thanks NRA for this important info!
Gun control measures ripped as misguided at hearing
State House Boston, MAGOAL Executive Director Jim Wallace and many GOAL members were in attendance and testified.  We would like to thank our members for the great turn out.  GOAL will update the results of this hearing when information becomes available.

From the Boston Herald;

Republican lawmakers and gun rights advocates testified Tuesday that a series of gun control measures promoted by Democrats - requiring imprinted serial numbers on firearms, "microstamped" bullets and annual limits on gun purchases - would punish lawful gun owners, increase the cost of handguns and hamper a 5,000-job industry in Massachusetts.

"In order to try and curb and curtail the violence ... we're penalizing those that are not the culprits," said Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke). "I would suggest to you that in the vast majority of cases, people that are misusing guns are doing it when they don't have licenses to carry."

Critics of stricter controls on gun ownership and purchasing blamed "black market" transactions, Mexican drug cartels and even the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for enabling criminals to access guns without licenses, and they argued that any additional oversight, licensing, or requirements to purchase insurance could put gun ownership out of reach for lawful citizens.

Specifically, opponents of microstamping legislation - which would require gun manufacturers to etch serial numbers into firearms and introduce technology in which fired bullets would be "microstamped" with a matching serial number - argued that it would be easily thwarted by those with criminal intent and would add to the cost of already-expensive guns.

At a State House hearing held by the Committee on Public Safety, freshman Rep. Paul Adams (R-Andover) weaved in verbatim NRA talking points as he testified against the microstamping legislation, although he didn't acknowledge that his testimony was based, in part, on the national pro-gun organization's research. He could not be reached for comment following the hearing.

Adams said "household tools" could be used to file down serial numbers on guns, and in many cases, gun crimes wouldn't be solved by microstamping. Adams said police in Lawrence, part of which is in his district, haven't asked for microstamping technology.

Rep. David Linsky (D-Natick), the sponsor of microstamping legislation, countered that the measure is a "common sense law enforcement assistance bill."

"This is the best available technology as far as solving firearm-related crimes," he said, arguing that it would add $7-per-firearm in startup costs but would eventually become less costly as companies adopted the technology.

Lawmakers also heard fierce opposition to a bill backed by Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz (S 1195) that would restrict gun purchases to 15 per year.

"Basically, this bill would shut down licensed gun dealers in the state of Massachusetts," argued Jim Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners' Action League.

Hats off to..  Monument Beach Sportsman's Club!

The Monument Beach Sportsman's Club, in conjunction with Cape Cod Cares 4 the Troops, opened up their club for the second year to the Wounded Warrior Project.

A number of Wounded Warriors, their family members and medical support staff were treated to a day of shooting on June 3rd. Club members and Entergy Security of Pilgrim Nuclear Station supplied firearms, ammunition, safety equipment and other related items. Several local businesses made either service/item donations or cash donations as sponsors to help cover additional expenses.

The Wounded Warriors spent their time on the archery range, the trap field, indoor pistol range and outdoor rifle range. Two of the most talked about activities were the archery range and an impromptu 100 yard egg shoot on the rifle range.

The Wounded Warriors were served a picnic lunch and at the end of the day they were treated to a pig roast with all the 'fixings.'

Members of the Monument Beach Sportsman's Club are already planning next year's event for these American Heroes! It is a worthwhile cause and we encourage other sportsman's clubs to step up and do the same.
