Deval Patrick blames GOAL for lack of progress on gun bill. GOAL responds.
| PATRICK TAGS GUN LOBBY WITH LACK OF PROGRESS ON
GUN BILL
By Jim O'Sullivan STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, MAY 10, 2010...... Gov. Deval Patrick blamed
firearms lobbyists Monday for his gun control legislation's lack of
progress amid another murder of a child over the weekend, drawing a
quick rebuke from the Gun Owners Action League, who called Patrick's
bill flawed and ineffective.
Hours after speaking with the mother of Jaewon Martin, the
14-year-old murdered on a Boston basketball court Saturday, Patrick
told reporters, "Look, there's a lot of volume that the gun lobby has
in this building, but it seems to me that people in neighborhoods,
those mothers that are losing their children on the streets of our
cities, the law enforcement who are having to deal with the
proliferation of illegal firearms out there, used in the course of crime
- those voices need to be raised, and those voices are greater in
number, and I think at the end of the day greater in significance than
the gun lobby."
The state's top firearms policy group said Patrick had
mischaracterized lobbyists' work.
James Wallace, executive director of GOAL, replied, "My first
question is: Who's the gun lobby? ... I don't lobby for guns, I lobby for
people. That's one of the tools they use to dehumanize us. We lobby
for . . . civil rights and public safety."

Oppose S.2260 (formerly S.2245)
|
Please call your legislators today and let them know that you are opposed to this bill becoming law!
GOAL Executive Director Jim Wallace's letter in opposition
May 11, 2010 Re: Opposition
to S.2260 - "An Act Relative to Comprehensive Siting Reform for Land Based
Wind Projects"
Dear Member
of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, It has come
to our attention that the House of Representatives may be taking up S.2260, the
Wind Siting Reform Act, as early as next week. On behalf of the members of Gun
Owners' Action League, I would like to take this opportunity to once again
express our deep concerns over this legislation. The premise of the legislation
is to create a fast track permitting system for an industry that has become
politically favored by certain groups and individuals. Since the
summer of 2009 Gun Owners' Action League has continued to ask pertinent
questions regarding the need and the implications of the legislation.
To date
these critical questions have never been answered.
-
Why
does this particular industry need a fast track permitting system?
-
If
Massachusetts provides a means for this particular industry to bypass the
normal environmental permitting system, will this lead to legal and legislative
challenges from other industries demanding the same ability?
-
If
so-called "green energy" can't pass the muster of the current environmental
laws, then how can it be called environmentally friendly?
-
Should
not the challenge for "green" industry be that it should be able to set an
example for all other industries by easily passing any environmental challenge
set before it?
As
the state's leading conservationists, gun owners and sportsmen/women have led
the way in professional wildlife management and habitat protection. We have
carefully and purposefully carried out a series of historic and sustainable
programs that have withstood the test of science and time.
On
the national scale there is the Migratory Waterfowl Stamp and the
Pittman-Robinson program. These efforts by gun owners and sportsmen/women have
resulted in establishment of wildlife refuges and habitat programs throughout
the nation.
On
a more local level, we worked to establish and maintain the Inland Fisheries
and Game Fund and the Wildlands Stamp Acquisition program. Both of these are
almost completely funded by gun owners and sportsmen/women.

GOAL Succeeds in Protecting Fish and Wildlife Funding

April 30, 2010
During the last week of
April 2010 the Massachusetts House of Representatives debated the fiscal year
2011 state budget. Prior to the debates taking place, the House members were required
to submit any proposed amendments to the budget. When these amendments were
posted for the general public Gun Owners' Action League (GOAL) alerted our
members to several threats to professional wildlife management here in the
Commonwealth. We are pleased to say that the calls from our members and the
hard work of friendly legislators were successful!
Two amendments were filed
to the FY2011 House budget that would have diverted millions of dollars from
the Inland Fisheries and Game Fund. The
proposed amendments, #149 and #152 filed by Representative James Murphy of the
4th Norfolk District were ultimately defeated! More.... |

We need help with Candidates!
|
Help us, help you, make great decisions on election day!
One of the fantastic after effects of Scott Brown being elected is a new resurgence of people that are willing to not only get involved by working for campaigns, but also to run for office.
There are more new candidates running for office this November within Massachusetts than we can recall seeing for a long time. In order to sort through them we are asking for some help. If you are a candidate for a county, state, or national office, or if you know or work for a candidate, please ask them to fill out one of our new candidate questionnaires.
This will give us a great read on how much a candidate knows, and cares about Second Amendment Issues. After completing we will grade the questionnaire and post that grade on our Candidate Ratings Pages. (See below) *Note: The U.S. Congress ratings are courtesy of the NRA. Also note that ALL of our current incumbents up for re-election have an "F" grade.
