Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Separation Anxiety is a common problem in puppies and dogs.  While one of the greatest joys in dog ownership is the tight bond you have with your dogs, sometimes if the dog is too dependant on you, separation anxiety can occur when you are apart.

Think about how your dog feels.  You are the most important thing in his/her world.  Dogs are pack animals who are very sociable creatures and thrive on company for many reasons.  Your dog would spend every minute of its life with you if it could.

What are the signs of separation anxiety?

1. Your dogs get really worked up and anxious when you are preparing to leave the house.  Things like picking up your car keys or putting on your coat can trigger the behavior.

2.  Your dog misbehaves only when you are separated.

3.  Your dog follows you everywhere and becomes stressed if not near you.

4.  When you come home your dog is over the top with greeting and takes a while to calm down.

A couple of tips on how to manage separation anxiety.

1.  Bring your dog to daycare so they get  the social interaction they need.

2.    Be sure to give plenty of exercise.  Walks, runs, etc.  A tired dog alone is better  than a hyper dog alone.

3. Provide some appealing toys to help occupy his time.

4.    Ensure your dog feels safe and comfortable when you are away.  Provide fresh water and clean warm bedding.
