What else is up at Bikram Yoga - Bend, Oregon?
The fall brings many opportunities to expand your yoga practice. The snows are coming and many of you will be putting the bike and climbing gear away and picking up the skis, snowboards and other winter gear. I know so many are looking forward to the coming winter. OF COURSE, one of the best ways to prepare is to deepen your personal commitment to your yoga practice. This is a great time to start a 30 or 60 DAY CHALLENGE. Just when you are have completed a challenge - the mountain will open - and your body and mind will be prepared for the season. Be sure to sign up at the studio and we will encourage and nudge you as you strengthen and tune your body.

On November 21st, the Oregon Hatha Yoga Championshipswill be at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland. This event is always an exciting display of the power of yoga in our lives. You can either watch this event or better yet - participate. Currently their are several students here in Bend that have committed to participating. We are conducting special clinics on Tuesday and Saturdays - 11am - to train and prepare for the event. Everyone is welcome to attend - and there is no charge. As a way to learn about additional postures those that are participating can join us in the advanced class. Anyone can participate in the championships, there is no requirement to be able to perform all the postures. In brief, participation will give you a process to learn more about your personal yoga practice. Be sure to talk to Michael, Eva or any of the teachers to find out how you can join us in this fun event.

Quote of the Month
"One has to be compassionate toward everything, including one's own self and thoughts."
- Dr. Richard Hawkins |
October 2010 Student of the Month
Dr. Jim Neilson
In Jim's words, "My most memorable experience in Bikram Yoga was by far my first class. It was a mind blower. It was very difficult, but I felt so exhilarated after that class I knew this yoga was what I needed". So just when was Jim's first class? Actually it was the day Bikram Yoga opened in Bend - January 3rd, 2004. Jim purchased a yearly unlimited on his third day - and continues purchasing the yearly - well, every year. That is truly unwavering commitment to his health and his personal yoga practice.
Jim used to be a pretty avid soccer player. When he first started Bikram Yoga he had achy knees, ankles and elbows from all his soccer. This pain slowly began to dissipate as he applied the therapy that comes from Bikram Yoga. At 51 years young, Jim says, "of course I feel stronger and more flexible - but also less reactive to things that used to stress me out before". He even noticed that his voice changed. He was surprised that one day he spoke up in a crowd and just felt so much more ease and depth in his voice.
When practicing Standing Head to Knee posture Jim experiences what he calls an amazing combination of strength, flexibility and concentration. Jim has not done a 30 day challenge - what he says, is that he is on a 30 Year Challenge because he wants to do this yoga well into his senior years. That is even more unwavering commitment.
Jim is a well respected chiropractor here in Bend. Certainly if you need a doctor that understands healing on many levels - be sure to look him up. Next time you see Jim be sure to congratulate him on his personal commitment to his health, his practice and his clients. And be sure to give him a high five for being October 2010 Student of the Month.

Book of the Month

Power vs. Force
David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.
kinesiology: -n. The Study of muscles and their movements, esp. as applied to physcial conditioning.
[Gk. Kinesis, movement (kinein, to move) + logy.]
Each of us possesses a computer far more advanced that the most elaborate artificial intelligence machine available, one that's available at any time - the human mind. The basic function of any measuring device is simply to give a signal indicating the detection by the instrument of slight change. In the experiments to be described in this book, the reactions of the human body provide such a signal of change in conditions. As will be seen, the body can discern, to the finest degree, the difference between that which is supportive of life and that which is not.
Follow this fascinating journey and you'll see how easy it can be to raise your consciousness to the levels of power, rather than force, so that you can become one of those who is awake and aware in the world. Your life will certainly never be the same.
If you want to have a deeper understanding of your body and your mind - if you want to explore the deeper regions of your yoga practice - this book is for you. I personally discovered this book many years ago and have found it to be one of the most instrumental books in my yoga practice and in teaching the fundamentals of yoga.
This book is available everywhere.
