What's Up?
The month of September is always that transition time between summer and fall. A time to get a few more hikes and such in before the snows come and we're ready to ski. This is a great time to reflect on what to let go of in our lives that are no longer necessary and to celebrate our lives in a way that expresses who we really are. Perhaps a time to take a personal inventory to see what is in the cupboards.
With that in mind I wanted to support and encourage the idea that perhaps it is good to look at the words we use - and why we use them. Be sure to look at the Quote of the Month to discover how we might limit ourselves. And especially read the Student of the Month, Audrey Hatfield to read how she has stood up to cancer - and the hope that she expresses in her life.
The Book of the Month, The Hearts Code, was selected with the idea that the energy of the heart and how we "see it" may be much greater than what we currently realize.
The photo above of Stepanie Bennett with her arms out like wings suggest that much is possible. I like the optimism! This picture was one of many that was submitted for the Strike a Pose! photo contest. Many of you sent in your pics as you practiced your yoga "on the move" over the summer. Be sure to click on the Facebook link on the left to see all the great pictures. On Friday, September 10th we will celebrate all the photos and announce the final winners for the 2011 Bikram Yoga Bend, Oregon Calendar. We will also celebrate everyone that completed their summer yoga challenge of 52 classes in 91 days. Be sure to join us at 7pm for this time to come back together and celebrate.
Another big event is coming. We have joined with the other Bend yoga studios of all traditions to unite for the biggest yoga class in the history of Bend. Yogis Unite! will join together on Sunday September 12th right here on the grass next to the river. This very special event was created to showcase yoga and the growing impact that this practice has on our community. There is no charge for this event - however we are asking for a $10 donation to help support The Bethlehem Inn and CAN Cancer. Please check out YU Bend on Facebook for more information and to register. The event will be from 10am to 2pm with early sign-in beginning at 9:30am. No yoga experience is necessary so be sure to join us for this special event!

September 2010 Student of the Month
Audrey Hatfield
Audrey first tried Bikram Yoga in 2004 - initially she just came to a couple of classes. Then in April of 2009 she started a regular practice of about four times a week. As an RN at St. Charles Hospital she works 12+ hour shifts - so she comes as much as she can. She says that the heat used to seem too much - but now she loves it! Audrey found that her low back pain is gone and her rotator cuff/tendon/shoulder is much better.
In April of this year Audrey was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. She quickly had a bilateral mastectomy and additional rebuilding surgery. Audrey believes that her yoga practice and the yoga community has kept her healthy and strong with fast recovery after both surgeries. Even though she felt at times that she was "holding back" in her yoga practice - she would do just what she could each time in class. In Audrey's words, "Mostly the support, friendship and love I have received from the Bikram community has carried me through this recovery. Practicing has kept me strong emotionally and physically as well as keeping a positive outlook. I am so thankful to have yoga in my life."
Audrey goes on to say that her favorite posture is Camel Pose. She likes the way it really opens her up and loves the little head rush when it is done. Her running is stronger, she has fewer injuries, fewer migraines, sleeps better and her cardiovascular health has improved.
If you know Audrey - you know that she always is positive and has a kind word for others. Next time you see her be sure to thank her for being such an inspiration to herself and all those she touches.

The Heart's Code
In this book Dr. Pearsall explores what is really happening in the heart on a emotional, energetic and spiritual level. This exploration is a direct result of his experience as a cancer survivor that was diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma.
Here are just a few questions that Dr. Pearsall explores in this book about the evolving awareness of the heart:
* Is it possible that the heart has its own form of intelligence that, because of our evolved dependence on our brain for interpretation of our experience, we are seldom aware of?
* Are the remarkable stories by some heart transplant recipients regarding changes in their food preferences, dreams and personality manifestations related on some level to the cellular memories of their donor?
* Is it possible to tune into the codes of other people's hearts?
I highly recommend this book for those that want to be enticed by the possibilities that the heart is showing us.
