Book of the Month
When a reporter asked the famor biologist J.B.S. Haldane what his biological studies had taught him about God, Haldane replied, "The creator, if he exists, must have an inordinate fondess for beetles," since there are more species of beetle that any other group of living creature. By the same token, a neurologist might conclude that God is a cartographer. He must have an inordinate fondness for maps, for everywhere you look in the brain maps abound.
- V.S. Ramachandran
Did you know that when you are driving your car, your brain thinks that the car is part of you? That the bumpers - front and back - are all connected with your hands and brain. Did you know that your brain thinks that a fork in your hand is part of the body? That your brain thinks that your skis, snowboard, bike are all part of the body? Did you know that even when you practice yoga that your mat and where you put it is all about "spatial issues" as determined by the brain?
Ok - this book may not be the lightest summer read. Yet it is really a fascinating book about how the brain works and how so much of what we do is dictated on levels that we are not always aware of. So pick up a copy today and feed your mind with new food for the maps of your brain.

July 2010
Student of the Month
Alexis Summer
Alexis says that yoga is a sweet retreat from her sometimes crazy and chaotic life. She is a single mom with a two young daughters and works full time as a paralegal. Her oldest daughter - 11 years old - told her that she needs to practice more to move forward and not plateau. Alexis practices everyday and even twice a day if time permits. She says that allowing herself 90 minutes and 26 postures to focus only on her and her body is probably the single greatest thing she has done for herself and those around her. Alexis started at the suggestion of her boyfriend Ryan who is currently on his third deployment in Irag. He returns to Bend later this summer and Alexis looks forward to being able to practice together.
Alexis says her most memorable experience was her first day. Her warm welcome and constant encouragement have led her to be very excited about her practice. She has learned quickly that her favorite and least favorite posture can change day to day. That her favorite one day will be her nemesis the next day. Alexis has discovered that Bikram Yoga has helped her allergy problems and is much better than a pill. To quote Alexis, "I have noticed that Bikram Yoga has made every physical activity I do better. If I can do 90 minutes in the hot hot room, I can do anything."
If you haven't met Alexis yet - she is often in the 6:15am class - with her mom Judy. Be sure to come early and congratulate Alexis on being Student of the Month.
Hope to see all of you in class today!
