Summer at Bikram Yoga

Rafting 2006

Here We Are Again - Summer in Central Oregon.  What a great time to get outdoors and do all our favorite "ings".  Biking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, rafting, picnicking...  and all the other "ings".   Staying busy with family and friends.   Of course there is also "yoga...ing". Well it's not really a word - but you know what it means.

At Bikram Yoga we encourage everyone to keep their yoga practice going in the summer - it's actually a great time to practice.  Generally the body is more open already - and who can resist jumping in the river after a warm sweaty class?

How are we celebrating summer?  Just take a look at all the activities we have planned.  I hope that you will join us!

52/91 - That's 52 Classes in 91 Days.  From June 1 to August 31st is 91 daysJoin us in committing to practice just 52 classes in 91 days. Do it any way you can - just do it!  Make the commitment by putting your name on the sign-up at the studio.  I guarantee your summer will be better!  Grand Prize of 3 Months Unlimited Yoga for the Most Classes. We will have a special celebration on Saturday, September 11th for all the finishers.

Quote of the Month

   "Argue for your limitations,
 and sure enough their yours."

 Richard Bach

Book of the Month

Illusions

What can you say about this book?  It is one of the classic books by Richard Bach.   I've personnaly read it something like 17 times.   It's an easy and quick read - and at the same time - filled with great insights and some ageless quotes.   Nothing is mentioned about "yoga".  Yet it is all about "yoga".  A perfect read to kick off the summer.

One of my favorites quotes from the book:
"You are never given a wish without being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however."

If you don't have this book yet - it is a must read.

You can pick up your copy today at any
bookseller or at the public library.

Student of the Month

Holly Vincent

Holly Vincent

The quote of the month, "Argue for your limitations and sure enough their yours",  does not apply to Holly.  Instead, Holly Vincent is truly a miracle.  She has had so many medical issues - yet she still has a smile on her face.  In this short space I will try to recap Holly's story.

Holly was born with a 59 degree scoliosis.  As a result she has lived with chronic pain, indigestion, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hysterectomy, appendicitis and headaches.    Holly has had five colon surgeries and has a mesh basket inside of her holding her organs together.   Her right lung is not fully functional due to the scoliosis.    Holly has "visited" an acupuncturist, physical therapist, nutritionist, naturopath, message therapist, medical doctors and the list goes on.

Years ago Holly's mom suggested after her first surgery to try yoga as a means of recovery.  After practicing various forms of yoga, Holly first started Bikram Yoga six years ago.  She walked into the studio, finished her 10 day intro and has been here ever since.  She did 100 days in a row and stopped counting.  Holly says that for the first time in her life, she is virtual pain free.  She still has some pain, but it is no longer constant.  Holly has definitely worked for it and discovered that Bikram Yoga is actually fairly gentle for her. She says. "And most importantly the HEAT is what naturally detoxifies me and keeps me balanced mentally and physically."   Holly even competed in the last Oregon Asana Championships.

Holly summarizes; "I come here because I feel more at peace with my body and soul.  I think more clearly and calmly when I am maintaining a daily yoga practice.  My husband says I am happier and nicer to be around.  I'm less toxic and have fewer headaches".

Perhaps next time your excuse bucket starts filling up - think of Holly.  Nothing seems to stop her. She truly lives with the idea that excuses just don't work for her.

When you see Holly be sure to congratulate her on being student of
the month - and for being an inspiration to so many people.

Hope to see all of you in class today!
