Although there seems to be some questions remaining, most statistics show that in the United States most births occur in August and September. It is thought that the Christmas and New Years holiday's has something to do with it. What do you think?
Yoga can be one of the most beneficial activities an expectant mother can do to insure a health vibrant baby. At Bikram Yoga we make some adjustments to the traditional series of postures to accomadate the changes in the body of the mother and insure the health of the baby. We call the series Rajashree's Preganancy Yoga. Most of these changes deal with the reduction of abdominal compression and encouraging the mother to practice in a cooler area of the room.

Posture of the Month |
|
Janushirasana Separate Leg Head to Knee
Janushirasana means head to knee pose. This posture helps to balance the blood sugar. It improves the flexibility of this sciatic nerves, ankles, knees and hip joints: improves digestion, enhances the proper functioning of the kidneys and expands the solar plexus.
To do this posture correctly is really quite simple. First make sure the forehead and the knee are always touching. So if need be, bend the knee first until the forehead will touch. From that point simply push the knee down - always maintaining the contact. One day your leg will be straight, your heel off the ground and the forehead firmly on the knee.

Mandy & baby Finley
Finley - Born August 3, 2009
We tried to interview Finley for this article but all that he wanted to do was feed and sleep. Can you imagine. Though we have included Mandy's thoughts about yoga and being a first time mother.
I have been doing Bikram yoga for about 4 years I think? And I didn't want to stop because I got pregnant! I was so happy that there was a pregnancy yoga alternative series for me to do. First off, I felt like the studio was a place where I got so much support. It was such a lift to come to yoga, not only for the constant support of teachers and students, but the relief I got really helped me through the first months of pregnancy. In the beginning, it really helped with morning sickness...which I had all day. It helped the nausea go away. Then, as my pregnancy progressed, it helped not only my hormones balance (my mood always improved after class!) but the aches and pains that came and went were much more in control. Although I did not come to class as much as I wanted to, I wonder if I had not come at all the difference I would have seen and the troubles I would have had. As my 9th month approached it got harder and harder to bend and stretch, but I knew it was helping. I really had to listen to my body and not overdo it. It was hard to take a step back and not go all out like I was used to in class, but it was also a nice break to give myself permission to take it a little easier than I normally would have. I only wish there had been a little more education on the part of my caregivers...I had to do the research, talk to the teachers, read the testimonials, and make my own decision about coming to yoga because my caregivers were not supportive of hot yoga during preganancy. But I knew what it was doing for my body and I felt fantastic after classes. I just listened to myself carefully and all was well.
Now that I am having to take some time off, I am really missing class! I miss sweating! And I know that the stresses that come with being a new mom would be helped by doing yoga. I can't wait until I can come back again! I know I will be a better mommy and wife when I finally am able to come back.
My husbands name is Mike and I don't know what I'd do without him! He is such a good dad and parenting partner.
Finley and I are so excited to be co-students of the month..!!
Hope to see all of you in class very soon..!!
