Bishnu Charan Ghosh

Every year on July 9th Bikram's Yoga College of India celebrates the life of Bikram Choudhury's guru, teacher and friend, Bishnu Charan Ghosh. On July 9th, 1970 Bishnu Charan Ghosh completed his final step of yoga by going through mahasamadi. This is how an "advanced" yogi passes away.
In the past, Bikram has asked the studios to be closed. This year we are asked to leave our studios open and donate any sale proceeds to the Bishnu Ghosh College Trust Fund. This fund is being used to help support the ongoing operations of Ghosh Yoga College in Calcutta, India. The school was established by Bishnu Ghosh in 1923 and is where the roots of Bikram Yoga come from.
As another step in supporting the school in India, supporting the new teachers just back from training and as a way to provide additional funds we have added "temporary" classes for the month of July. To view the temporary classes go to the schedule on our website, Temporary Classes. These classes are donation only and regular class packages do not apply. We are suggesting donations of $5 to $15 for these special classes.
In addition, Jenny Trembly, LMT is offering to provide chair massage on July 9th. The chair massage will be offered at the studio from 1pm to 4pm. There will be some slots available to sign-up and some just for walk-in. If you want to assure your spot, be sure to schedule at the front desk. Suggested donation is $1 a minute for a 10 to 20 minute massage. Jenny has graciously offered to donate the money raised to the fund.
We hope to see all of you in class helping to support this important cause.

| Posture of the Month |
|
Once we get to the Tree Pose we are doing the final set of the standing series. As we do this posture we are beginning to slow down our heart rate. This posture is excellent for improving balance and flexibility of the ankles, knees and hip joints. At first you may have to hold your foot up on your hip so it does not slip. You want to be able to beginning pushing the knee down and back, eventually it will look like you have two knees from the side. When your ankles, knees and hip joints open more, the foot will more easily remain on your hip by itself.
This posture will help you prepare for the next posture, toe stand. It is also a preparatory pose for the more advanced Lotus Pose - which we only do in the advanced series.
One of the best ways to learn more about the postures is to come to class everyday and read Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class book. Then, you will "Make Your Body Smile!"

| Student of the Month |
July Student of the Month is
Collene Funk

Before starting Bikram Yoga, Collene suffered from chronic muscle spasm in her shoulder. As a writer and editor Collene has spent many hours sitting at her desk. Over several years Collene used massage, chiropractic care, muscle relaxants and pain killers to help alleviate the pain in her shoulders. Then about six months ago Collene began Bikram Yoga. Right from the start during the 10 Day Intro Special Collene came every single day. Since then she has continued coming to class an average of four times a week.
Now Collene is "pain free". She finds it is now easy to sit at her desk without all the shoulder and back pain. She notices that her posture is much better. Collene also finds she is sleeping so much better. Having previously been worried about sleeping in the wrong position, she now sleeps however she wants. She now finds that all the previous stiffness and soreness has virtually disappeared.
When changes happen in the body, changes also happen in the mind. Mental strength and determination grow. Collene explains, " When I first started practicing, I wanted to see all my changes quickly and felt frustrated that at times progress would be slow. This is no longer a problem for me; my rate of progress hasn't changed, but I am much more patient with myself."
Bikram reminds us frequently that with this series we are given the kingdom of good health. Through the continuous repetition of the beginning Bikram Yoga postures, changes will happen in the body. For Collene she has been seeing this in several postures. First, Collene sees progress in Standing Head to Knee. She can see her body going through the steps of improvement that are bring her closer to the final position. Second, she sees it in Triangle Pose. Feeling her heart rate makes her feel fully ALIVE! Third, in Standing Bow Pulling Pose Collene says, "how excited I was the first time I saw my toes peek over the top of my head. Now with time, I can almost see my whole foot!"
Collene's strong desire to stick with the practice is what allows her to continue progress. Healing and strengthening the body takes time and effort. Both outward and inward progress are happening together to create more awareness, self acceptance and self confidence. All of these things together form a more peaceful and happy life both inside and out. Bikram would say that Collene has "English Bulldog Determination and Bengal Tiger Strength."
