Yoga & Back Pain

Think Psychological Not Physical....

Backache Spine May 2008

So many of us have suffered from one time or another with a very painful backache.  We have searched for many ways to help bring relief.  We have seen a multitude of various doctors.  Some of us have needed pain medication - sometimes not being able to live without it.  Some have even taken the step of some type of surgery.  All to help chase the pain away.

Many people have walked into a Bikram Yoga class hearing stories of relief from various aches and pains - including back pain.   A huge book of testimonials could be written from all those whose pain went or way or was greatly diminished through Bikram's Yoga. Yet what about those whose pain returns?  Or what about those who need to seek medical attention?

So why does some pain go away and some pain does not?  If you know the whole answer you would be a very rich person.  The yogi's have been saying for thousands of years that as we learn to still the fluctuations of the mind health and well being return.   That somehow our overactive sub-conscious minds trigger our bodies to respond in various ways.

Sometimes in class it is easy to get too caught up in "thinking" that the yoga is doing it's wonders strictly by the various physical postures - when in fact the healing is really occurring through the mind.   In class we tend not to have time to think of anything because of the focus needed to perform a posture.  What an excellent distraction!  One of the lessons that Bikram instills in us is "don't worry about, forget about it, just do the yoga".  That the magic and the science of yoga will work - if we truly let it.

The western medical community seems to be catching up with what the yogis have been saying.  Dr. John Sarno coined a now famous term called "Tension Myositis Syndrome".  In it's most simplest terms, TMS is essentially the rage (fluctuations) of the sub-conscious mind trying to distract itself from feeling the emotions that are rising.  It does that by creating mild oxygen deprivation in various parts of the back.  This mild oxygen deprivation creates the pain.

Now not all doctors accept this diagnosis.  Yet what if it is right?  What if the yogis have been right all along?  What if Dr. Sarno and a growing base of doctors have found the medical and scientific basis for what is the cause of back pain?  What if this evidence suggest that there is an over aggressiveness in the use of surgery?    I'll let you decide for yourself.   Below is a link to an article that describes how more and more doctors are suggesting to their patients with back pain to "think psychology and not physical".  And after you read the article come into class and keep working on "learning to still the fluctuations of the mind".   You just might leave class "with a smiling happy face".

Can you beleive how much your thigh burns in this posture?  Or how hard it is to keep the straight leg from slipping?   Then the teacher seems to keep holding this posture forever.  What's a yogi to do?  Ah, the sweet sensation of streatching and strength with sweat running down your body.

Ok..  this posture is really much simplier than it seems some time.   So a couple tips to remember.   Always make sure that your heels are exactly in one line.  This creates the base of the foundation that you are creating.  Then when you are bending your knee- don't stop until you are all the way down - yes make sure you feel your thigh burning.   Contiue to keep your straight leg - straight and strong.   Now your total foundation is in place.  Then you simply turn your arms making sure that the elbow is at the knee and the fingers are streaching between the big and second toe - all the while looking up while stretching your arms in two different directions.  Now what?  It's simple - breathe and think stillness.   That's it.  Enjoy..!!

One of the best ways to learn more about the postures is to read Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class book.    And, when you come to class everyday you will "Make Your Body Smile!"

Corinn Clark MaY 2008

Coming up on her four year yoga anniversary, Corinn remembers the beginning of her yoga journey. She would see the 'Make Your Body Smile' advertisement in The Source and wonder where the heck is Industrial Way?'. Then one day she walked into the heated studio for the very fist time. After class, she thought whoever practiced Bikram Yoga were out of their friggin' minds. Yet, she decided to try a couple more classes before making any final judgments. After the Intro Special, she felt amazing and purchased a Monthly Unlimited - has been practicing ever since. Now averaging four times a week, the practice becomes more meditative over time. "I have found a peaceful place where I can return when class becomes difficult. Of course, I still have moments that make me want to run out of the studio and yell like a wild banshee, but they are becoming increasingly less frequent!"

Yoga has helped Corinn in many ways. She and her husband, Paolo agreed to do a 30 day challenge together. During the challenge, she noticed many physical changes. She began to understand what it meant to 'contract every muscle'. Her body felt as though it had a desire to reach beyond previous limitations including working through her own scoliosis and injured hamstrings. Her spine continues to improve and her curvature is greatly reduced. Yes, again back to that ad that she read in The Source, her body and spine is actually smiling!

But the smiles have not always been constant. Her most difficult yoga experience occurred when, for about six months, every posture and every movement were painful. For a brief moment she actually considered discontinuing her yoga practice. But, after hours of surfing the net and coming up with myriad self-diagnoses, Corinn decided that the best idea was to continue her yoga practice. In hindsight, she understood that these sensations were evidence of massive realignment - both physically and emotionally. Instead of quitting, she instead had to back off a bit and refrain from judging herself for not being able to do postures as "well" as in the past. It taught her to be gentle and kind to her body and to attend class without worrying about what may or may not be accomplished on any given day. This period, however difficult, helped her to learn this valuable skill of respecting the body and its natural ability to heal through continuous effort.

Most recently Corinn attended both days of Jason Winn's Posture Clinics. The workshop brought her additional perspectives of her Bikram's Yoga practice. She attended both the Beginning and Advanced Workshop. It was great to hear all the questions posed at the beginning workshop. Then attending Bikram's Advanced Workshop Jason helped her understand all of the postures at a deeper level.

Taking what she learns in the room and into her life is evidence that yoga is helping improve her life. "My patience, focus and confidence have all increased. I am kinder to myself and my body. I have become very aware of the random thoughts that float through my mind. I would like to be free from self-imposed limitations and Bikram Yoga has been instrumental in creating a shift in these types of destructive thoughts. Bikram Yoga has helped me deal with my fears and has created a desire to continuously improve on a personal level. Overall, I believe yoga is a lifelong practice. It is both a journey in self-awareness and a beautiful form of artistic physicality. It literally touches every aspect of who we are and helps us to heal both on a physical and emotional level. Yoga has improved my life and will remain an integral part of my life."
