A Springtime Trailside Pleasure:
LIVESTRONG Volunteer Day
What would we at The Trail Foundation do without the tremendous energy and time that so many of you selflessly provide? Our latest act of volunteer kindness took place March 31st, when Lance Armstrong Foundation employees stepped up to help TTF spruce up the Trail - just in time for spring.

The LIVESTRONG group pitched right in, planting 25 small bald cypress trees along Lady Bird Lake's edge. The team also kayaked, picking up trash and debris deposited along the shoreline, and helped paint a pedestrian bridge at the end of the Holly peninsula on the eastside. The stately cypress trees will grow to shade the Trail and shelter birds and other wildlife.

Thank you for all of your hard work! And special thank yous go also to LCRA, for generously providing the boats for the cleanup volunteers, and to the Parks and Recreation Department for lining up the painting volunteers.

Gimme Little Signs
Shoal Creek Spoke Trail Sign
Shoal Creek Trail
You may have noticed the initial signs of Phase I of our Master Signage Plan have been installed!

Designed by RVi Planning to provide Trail users with important, directional and educational information, the new signage includes the Trail's first interpretive sign (to be installed on the Pfluger Bridge in the coming months), which will tell the story of the Trail.

Special thanks to the MFI Foundation and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation for funding the first phase of this project. Watch for more signs - soon!
She's a Winner!

Marion Burch Cimbala, winner of the free year-long membership to Pure Austin during March's TTF week, shares stories with us about her luck and love of the Trail.

"Recreation has been a big part of my career path and the Trail has brought a lot of opportunity to explore that. I especially like the social aspect of seeing so many parts of the community come together. The Trail is at the center of so many options from free learn-to-row days at the Austin Rowing Club to jumping in Deep Eddy before a run, connectivity to this phenomenal Trail is a force that ties us all together. It's a great place for people to come out to do good for themselves and the community at large."

Decker Challenge Benefits TTF
Susan Rankin receives the Decker  Proceeds form ARC president Angela Kelly
Decker Challenge Proceeds
At its winter 2010 party, the Austin Runners Club generously donated $4,000 to TTF from the proceeds of the Decker Challenge. This is the sixth year that Decker has made The Trail Foundation a beneficiary, and we're humbled.

We love the Decker event and recognize the Trail is where most Austin runners do the bulk of their Decker Challenge training miles.

The Trail community thanks ARC for the generous support!

Can You Spot the Birds of Lady Bird Lake?
Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron
We been hearing so much about bird sightings at the Trail that we asked our volunteers to create an online resource suitable for birders of all experience levels.

This resource offers several bird guides with links to photos and more information about each bird. Our appreciation and special thanks go out to our anonymous and generous birder volunteers for developing this Trail-specific Bird Guide!

Good news!  Several gardens are available now for adoption on the Trail at the north and south ends of the Pfluger Bridge.

If you are interested in planning, planting and tending your very own garden on the Trail, drop us an email!

Waller Creek Pedestrain Bridge Update

The pedestrian bridge over Waller Creek in the vicinity of Red River and Rainey Street has been reopened following successful asbestos removal.

The City had initially believed that the bridge and a portion of the Trail would need to be closed for two weeks during business hours while work crews removed an asbestos coating from the bridge's underside.  The project was completed ahead of schedule by streamlining the work schedule and by adding additional workers.
