Consumers have had enough
Unlike other online "do it yourself" websites such as shopping and banking, online travel sites are complicated and frustrating. This, according to Forrester Research as reported in the New York Times. And it is sending travelers back to their user-friendly travel agents. Consumers told researches that travel sites are not easy to use and that they are full of fine print and industry jargon that is difficult to understand. The result? Growing consumer dissatisfaction-particularly among those who travel the most, namely corporate travelers.
And click here for an article on the same research from CNN.com
America's 10 Best and Worst Airports 2009 Forever delayed in Dallas and always late at La Guardia? If it seems that every time you go through certain airports, you experience a flight delay it is not your imagination-travelers are delayed at some airports more than others.
Every year Travel + Leisure gathers statistics from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics to rank those 10 with the better track-record (10 Best) and those with the 10 Worst record for on-time performance. It is based on flights that departed more than 15 minutes behind schedule from April 1, 2008, to March 31, 2009. What does this mean for you? Consider flying out of an alternate airport to improve the chances of an on-time departure, make your connection and get to your destination on time. Click here for the list of the 10 Best and Worst Airports for 2009. Most expensive cities cited The average daily cost of travel has increased modestly to $325.67 in 2009 according to the recent BTN Corporate Travel Index 2009 report. Hotel accommodations remain the most expensive part of the equation at 42% with food at 30% and transportation at 28%. New York tops the list as the most expensive city for business travelers followed by Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. |

On The Road |
|
Advice from Road Warrior Rick Rector, the Publisher of HME News & VP of United Publications in Yarmouth. If you strength train, many hotels don't offer any equipment you can use, other than the standard treadmills and sometimes a bike. I carry an exercise band made from surgical tubing in my suitcase. That, combined with push-ups, dips and sit-ups can give you a good workout in your room. Ask a trainer at your gym or Y to give you a workout routine for the road, so you can maintain conditioning.
Here's another tip from Rick:
If you travel a lot, being able to wait in the airline club instead of at the gate can make a big difference in your productivity and state of mind. Rather than joining a bunch of clubs, the American Express platinum card will get you into American Airlines, Continental, Delta and Northwest clubs if you're flying on those airlines. Just show your boarding pass, photo ID and American Express platinum card for entrance.
Speaking of American Express... Hurley Travel Experts has teamed up with our local American Express representative to make sure companies we work with are receiving the best benefits. Are you getting the most value from your corporate credit card? Contact Denise Meiler to set up a meeting with our local representative and see what we can do for you. |

Where, you might wonder, do the experts at Hurley Travel Experts go for travel information?
Travelsense.org is a one-stop travel guide for consumers created by our professional association: the American Society of Travel Agents. We especially like the "create your own packing list" feature that allows us to check off items based on details such as where we are going; the weather and we can then personalize the list for our needs. And speaking of packing
We found this "Ask Teri Column" in a recent Wall Street Journal of interest to our women corporate travelers: For travel, your best carefree clothing is knitwear and woven garments infused with a little stretch, which tends not to wrinkle as much as traditional garments do. Avoid flimsy, shapeless knits; you want shape-retaining knitwear that feels heavier, including thicker double-faced weaves.

 Greetings :
For many enterprises, business travel is simply an unavoidable cost of doing business and, despite economic conditions, remains a necessity. As a result, a number of organizations have been forced to re-evaluate and more effectively manage this high spend category. Hurley Travel Experts is helping provide solutions to our customers that enhance their overall control and management of travel & entertainment (T&E) expenses. These solutions enable transparency and business intelligence by providing documented records of the actual, final expenses related to a travel event and the understanding of employee compliance to T&E policies. While travel management involves a comprehensive analysis, we believe there are many ways for companies to capitalize on savings from front end booking to expense reporting. This month's issue of The Business Traveler highlights but a few of these available tools.
We welcome any opportunity to discuss our travel expense systems and purchasing economies of scale with you. Sincerely, Pam Hurley Moser - hurley@travelexperts.com

1. Check-in online for your flight. Simply select your airline and the website will take you directly to the online check-in for that airline. What could be easier? 2. Access your booking 24/7. Just enter your booking number and last name to view live up-to the minute itinerary, seats, or print an electronic ticket receipt. 3. Decide: to check or not to check? Confirm the latest price for your airline's baggage rates and click on the airline's logo for the updated baggage policies. 4. Discover what documentation you need to travel to Canada or Mexico as of June 1, 2009. 5. Know before you go. What is the average rainfall in Buenos Aires? Where is the capital of Azerbaijan? | Concur Expense Management |
|
We are happy to announce that Concur, a global leader in employee spend management, has chosen Hurley Travel Experts to be a fulfillment agency for their on-line booking tool Cliqbook. Employee spending has a huge impact on your bottom line. Aberdeen Research has found that travel & entertainment expenses typically account for between 8% and 10% of total operating expenses. And the biggest challenge facing finance executives and travel managers is the lack of compliance with T & E policies. On average, approximately 20% of T&E spend is out of policy. You can save costs on employee spending in three important ways: 1) Control the spending when it occurs 2) Drive efficiency within the transaction 3) Reduce the operational cost Visibility is key. By using a product like Concur and Cliqbook you can see where the spend is taking place, who is spending it and who is in or out of compliance with a travel policy. You have complete visibility from the beginning of a purchase through to the final invoice and reimbursement. Forward thinking organizations are solving the entire problem - either today or in stages. Concur delivers a unified solution that solves the whole problem. Concur's solution can improve compliance by over 38%, cut travel booking costs by 62%, reduce expense report processing time by 42%, and cut operational costs by 40%. A Gartner Group study reveals that "a 5% reduction in operating costs has the same P&L impact as a 30% increase in sales!" |
| Cliqbook Online Booking Tool |

| Secure Flight |
|
Secure Flight is a program developed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in response to a key 9/11 Commission recommendation: uniform watch list matching by TSA. Implementation of all Secure Flight passenger data elements for domestic carriers begins Aug. 15, 2009.The mission of the Secure Flight program is to enhance the security of domestic and international commercial air travel through the use of improved watch list matching. Secure Flight is a behind the scenes program that streamlines the watch list matching process, improving the travel experience for all passengers. Not all airlines are currently participating, but will in the coming months. Why is my travel agent now asking for my name as it reads on my ID? This will assist the airlines and TSA on their collaboration to collect data in advance and compare the information you provide against the government watch lists. What if my name and ID do not match exactly? Will I be turned away and unable to fly? NO. Secure Flight will not impact the process at the security checkpoint in any way. Secure Flight is a behind-the-scenes process. You should provide your name as it appears on your government issued ID that you will be using when flying. This should include your first, middle and last name. You will also be asked for your Date of Birth to help identify you with the Secure Flight process. |
