Focus on the Pain Level:  Very often we want to change 3 and 4 of our dog's behaviors (or ours or someone elses) NOW.  What I often ask my clients turns out to be a very effective question you can ask yourself:  On a scale 1-10, how bad is the behavior?  If it's spiraling to over 5, then it may be time to consider some coaching and life changes for you and the dog.

PS-- Sorry, we don't board
We hope you are enjoying a lovely summer with your dogs!
Be mindful that dogs need plenty of water and cool shade in these hot-- summer days.

The Training and Wellness Sanctuary is a family dog training, pet-asissted therapy training and behavior-wellness counseling biz.  After receiving 3-calls this week asking about boarding, I went and explored my own web site.  I'm cool-- it doesn't say boarding, so I know I haven't gone senile.

We are happy to offer recommendations, but the best thing to do, during holidays or vacations, is to plan ahead.  Ask others for referrals, and/or visit a couple of local boarding facilities.  Veterinarians and Vet Techs usually have good referrals.  Oftentimes, they board at their facilities.

An excellent alternative is profofessional pet-sitting.  Be sure they know your specific pets (species, behaviors, needs) and what services they will offer. Pet Sitters Org.

Remember, training doesn't start and stop for any species.  It is a lifelong opportunity of learning that keeps us (and dogs) alive and thriving.  Any specie's brain can RUST through lack of use.  Integrating training (L.E.T. lazy-easy-training) into everyday life, by simply remembering the MANTRA, you do something for me and I'll do something for you, "SIT, HERE'S YOUR FOOD" makes a difference.

ClicktoAnswerIf you chose "B", bravo.  Most dogs have about 3-feet of intestine compared to us humans who have 30.

When you hear raw-food advocates say that dogs seldom get salmonella or e-coli-- this is why. However, sick dogs and/or dogs not use to a raw diet can pick up bacterial diseases.  If you are considering a raw diet, make the switch slowly and consult with an expert.  Dogs have a much stronger pH than we do, so the acidity will kill most bacteria.  Dogs digest food more quickly, so it doesn't have time to sit in the intestines.  If you want to learn more, visit the IHPE expo on 9/10 & 11 at the Fitchburg Marriott.  Holistic Veterinarians, Practitioners and Nutritionists will be on hand in the exhibit hall and giving presentations.

When you think behavior, consider A.B.C. Virtually all good dog trainers and behaviorists know, and teach, that there is an Antecedent, Behavior and a Consequence.  In Operant Conditioning, a behavior can be voluntarily offered, negative or positive, and negatively or positively reinforced.  That leaves a lot of training options.

Consquences are defined as reinforces or punishers based on the effect they have on behavior, not by what the dog who delivers them intend for them to be.  This is a critical mistake that is often made by trainers who are not very knowledgeable about behavioral principles.

Functional Assessments that go beyond just talking about what the dog (or human) did is to develop the ABC profile.  Discovering the causes and maintainors of undesirable will enable us to develop strategie to prevent undesirable behaviors and identify replacement behaviors that serve the same function and/or give the dog an outlet for energy and pleasure.
