Awareness |
Focus on what you like: the 80/20 guide: Too often we focus 80% of of our energy on when our dogs do something we don't like and 20% on rewarding them for spontaneous good behavior. Changing this to 20/80 will make a big difference~ It is so easy to reward a dog for sitting for his dinner or before going outside, rather than waiting until he dislocates ours (or someone else's) kneecaps. |

Let's walk the talk by clarifying a few myths on training our dogs.
1. If you let dogs exit a door ahead of you, you are letting them be dominant. There is no evidence that supports this. In fact, observing dog litters with Moms, oftentimes it makes more sense for the pups to go first. This is an individual choice within packs. I work with dogs in therapeutic milieus. Oftentimes, it makes more sense for a well-trained dog, in a specific environment, to go through the door first. Dog are smart enough to be taught go foreword and sit/wait.
2. Dogs have an innate desire to please. A vast amount of evidence suggests that dogs, like most functioning animals who want to survive, are motivated by food, water, sex and play. They enjoy bonded relationships whether in a pack of dogs or humans. They are motivated by fear and pain, and pleasure. Most, not all, are social. Some, like people, prefer to be alone.
3. Rewards are bribes and thus compromise leadership. Not so, and this isn't just my opinion.
Dr. Susan Friedman shares: the idea that behavior should just "flow like a fountain" without the need of consequences, is opposed by more than sixty years of unequivocal evidence that behavior is a tool to produce consequence. Bribes are given BEFORE a behavior. Rewards are given AFTER a behavior. There is a mountain of evidence after decades of research in pure and applied settings that demonstrates that positive reinforcement (i.e. reward for behavior) is very powerful.

alpha This, Alpha That |
Prior to the workshp, Monique and Maureen guided dog teams in a baseball game. Training is always more fun when the dog is given the opportunity to think and wag.
Monique shared her past 20 years of experience as a vet tech, trainer and behaviorsist, along with videos of dog packs in action. It gave us an opportunity to explore body language and it's meaning, clarifying many of the myths about the proverbial "alpha roll-over", which we know now isn't natural when a human tosses a dog. Subordinate in a dog or wolf pack is necessary for survival, but the subordinate rolls themselves. A true "pack leader" isn't loud and boisterous, just scary. Sure, we can scare our dogs, but that won't make them (or anyone else) look up to us as respected, sound and trusted leaders. Loonies maybe-- and we are all looney at times. that's okay-- forgive yourself knowing that there is a better way.
Special thanks to Gary Ross, who nearly had a "stroke" when Monique's videos were having a hard time communicating with the laptop and projector. Computers aren't perfect, just like us humans!

Quiz ~ Training--Wellness Tip |
Don't Peek!
What is the most effective type of leader for dogs?
A. Alpha, because I can overpower you--
B. Dominant because I have authority--boogabooga
C. Pack Leader because I own the food--
D. Subordinate because dogs will submit--
E. Benevolent-- subtle psychological control
|
If you chose "E", reward yourself. There is much brouhaha about Alpha these days. Studies have been done by people like Dr. Frank Beach, Dr. L. David Mech, Dr. Ian Dunbar and Dr. Ray Coppinger. More is being researched by Jean Donalson and others. One thing is for sure-- the family dog is different than the wolf. Although DNA identical, like us humans are with chimpanzees, dogs have evolved to live differently. We don't consult with chimps in the jungle about how to raise our children. Evolution is a fascinating thing-- as is paradigms. Paradigm is evolved thinking. There is a place in every dog pack (human pack) for benovelent leadership. A true leader has the ability to control without force. The vast majority of alpha dogs (in packs) lead benevolently. They do not stoop to physical domination to prove their point. They don't need too. Bluster middle rankers (usuall insecure with big egos) need to strut their stuff like Fonzies. True leaders-- lead through subtle control (body language), such as confident posture, withering glances, staring, stalking, dogging (persistently hassling), barking or growling. These come in varying ranges. Dominesticated dogs living with families need to be socialized at an early age, and consistently so throughout a lifetijme. Introducing them to other dogs, who have good "camling signals-- Turid Rugaas" is essential. Not all dogs will, want or need to play at a park or live with dogs.
