Awareness |
"Everyone who is responsible for animals, farmers, rangers, zookeepers and pet owners need a set of simple, reliable guidelines for creating good mental welfare that can be applied to any animal in any situation. The best guidelines we have are the core emotion systems in the brain. The rule is simple: Don't stimulate RAGE, FEAR and PANIC if you can help it. DO stimulate SEEKING and PLAY." ~ Dog Training & Wellness Connection ~
Our Moments Belong to the Pack and We remember ourselves through them-- |
Linda Tellington Jones (TTOUCH), Maureen Ross, and Jill Lane -- and especially, FRED, AMBA Conference, Rhode Island, Mystic Aquarium and Roger Williams Park Zoo.
Last week I intended my first ABMA conference, called Bridging the Gap. ABMA brought animal behaviorists and trainers, of all species, together to explore animal husbandry and enrichment. I was overjoyed to discover that most trainers of giant species, including Beluga Whales and Elephants, are using positive reinforcement training.
To be able to see (and practice) "double target clicker training" in action was impressive. Watching a giraffe ease his way into a confinement area to have cysts gently drained from his hoofs without kicking and screaming is a far cry from the days of tranquilizing and using elephant hooks and chains. Monkeys will move their butts to the cage door for Vets to draw blood or give injections.
This requires a robust determination, dedication and trust between handler and animal. It can take 14 months to teach one behavior to a Dolphin or Beluga Whale, so we dog trainers need to explore taking a deep breath. As Terry Ryan said, "we tend to want to CLUMP things together and get it done now."
It was a good opportunity to network with some old friends and mentors like Terry Ryan and Karen Pryor, and meet some new ones. I explored the fine art of chicken training at Terry's Chicken Training Clinic and, yes, this was inside the Crowne Plaza. Chickens are FAST.

Quiz ~ Training Tip |
Don't Peek!
How can you change almost all "illegal" or "unacceptable" dog behavior most effectively?
A. Take the dog to the park for some exercise
B. Identify the behavior, prevent and manage, then teach a different behavior
C. Punish the dog by taking away his toys and food
D. Yelling AH, AH, AH and trying out the Milan Claw
E. Forget about it and take a nap
|
If you chose "b", bravo! There are always exceptions to the rule, but I've had the good fortune of talking to many behaviorists and trainers. The most effective training approach is positive reinforcement training and allowing our dogs to "think" in a calm, responsive way.
The best way to change an "illegal" behavior to "legal" is first, awareness. Number one is identify the behavior you do not like. For example: Barking. 2. Prevention and Management (know when the dog barks the most, time of day, at who, and prevent it and, 3. teach a substitute behavior, like bark three times and shush.
We tend to focus 80% of our energy of correcting dogs when they've done something wrong and only 20% snapshotting good behavior like settling down and being "quiet". Barking isn't the issue. Dogs have to bark. The issue when, for how long, and getting them to do something, as a substatitute, for the barking like get their Kong. Happy Training lasts a lifetime for dogs and humans~
