Mind like water ~ Going with the Flow

Go with the flow is a metaphor that applies to navigating the river.  When we go with the flow, our mind is like water.  We follow the current.  As a river will empty into the sea, water does not hold back.  It joins with a larger body of water, without fearing a loss of identity or control.  Going with the flow doesn't mean we don't know where we are headed.  Like a puppy, it simply is open to discovery.

Training Moments
TopTM's coming in many ways for owners, trainers, behaviorists.  My favorite is observing the dogs doing what comes naturally.  Welcome to

The Dog Sniff -- Meet & Greet
 DogSniff09
Pictured-- feet, Sunnie, Beckie and Journey (9-weeks).  This is a "safe" and "supervised" interaction, which is the way it should be whether at a dog park, class or someone's backyard.  If this escalated to anything "unsafe", owners would call their dogs.  The liklihood hood is, the excitment of being with other dogs after a long-winter, they won't come.  We are BORING.  Next step, calmly walk over and hook up your leash, walk away and ask for a "sit."  Then, if WE CHOOSE, it's "okay, GO PLAY."

Being with our dogs is a catalyst for deeper connection to them and ourselves.  Integrating touch for desensitization is an vantage point for you and your dog.  Several dogs graced us for Karen's Benefits of Canine Massage & Acupressure workshop.

Simple stretching and pinching (skin rolling) helps desensitize dogs to touch, grooming, Vet welllness checks and children. Plus, if done calmly, it lowers blood pressure for us.  A Cry Unheard, Dr. James Lynch
Be mindful, if you want to become a practitioner, there are several avenues and schools such as: Pet Massage Institute

Each state has their own significant regulations that we must adhere too.  Canine Massage, Acupressure, Doga and Stretch do not take the place of diagnosis or treatment planning and should be in collaboration with your Primary Veterinarian if you dog is recovering from injury.

Don't Peek!
What is negative reinforcement?  You'll know this if you read the article on Pack Leadership - Alpha This Alpha That

A.  dog sits, you walk away
B.  dog runs off, you scream
C.  dog lies down, you stop scowling
D.  dog runs off, you click
E.  dog lies down, you pull up on leash

answerIf you chose "c", bravo!  Negative Reinforcement (NR) means the dog's behavior makes something bad go away like you scowling, pulling on leash.  NR is any unpleasant event or stimulus, no matter how mild that can be halted or avoiding by changing one's behavior.  The trick to effective NR is to learn when to STOP giving it when the subject's behavior improves even slightly, NOT something most of us can do on a timely basis.

By far, unless you are an experienced trainer/behaviorist, positive reinforcement where a dog's "preferably" voluntary behavior makes something GOOD happen is most successful and pleasurable for human and dogs.   Wag to Top
