"Everyone who is responsible for animals, farmers, rangers, zookeepers and pet owners needs a set of simple, reliable guidelines for creating good mental welfare that can be applied to any animal in any situation.  The best guidelines we have are the core emotion systems in the brain.  The rule is simple:  Don't stimulate RAGE, FEAR and PANIC if you can help it.  DO stimulate SEEKING and PLAY."  Dr. Temple Grandin, Animals Make us Human

 Canine Massage/Acupressure Workshop
Saturday - March 7, Snow-Date, 3/14
1:00 - 5:00 / $40.00
Top Join Karen Lachapelle of Rub-My-Belly for an afternoon workshop on Canine Massage and Acupressure.  The connection between human & dog is unique.  Petting makes friends, massage is therapeutic.  This is something we can give to our pets that makes us feel good too.

Massage and acupressure has many benefits.  Relief comes from an increased flow of blood, oxygen and awareness.  When the body is relaxed, it can recover more quickly from overexertion, soreness, injury and stress.

Additionally, massage is a delightful way of calming reactive dogs.  Learn more ... Canine Massage.  To register:  CMT Workshop Registration

Journey
The connection between training and wellness is inseparable.

This adorable little "snausage" is about 2-lbs at 1-week old, already vocalizing and cramming to reach her Mom's nipple with 8 siblings. In a week, she will be walking around, playing with toys and littermates.  At 8-10 weeks, she will join her new family.  That's a lot of transition for one little, learning being.

At 6-months, she will weigh about 80lbs and behaviorally be about 8 years old.  Full grown, she'll weigh about 125-130, as pictured below.

Newfie's are strong water dogs, who love people, drafting, the "right" kind of training and therapy work.

Trainers, Owners, be mindful that regardless of size, breed, temperament, all dogs deserve positive-reward based training that begins as soon as possible.

It is important to begin early socialization and desensitizing to sights, sounds, smells (real world).  All this can be simulated in training classes and during private training, BUT, the training practice doesn't become real until owners (families) know that this is a life long journey.

Training doesn't start and stop.  It is on a continuum and easily integrated into day-to-day living.  Enjoy the Journey ~ They grown so fast !

Quiz ~ Training Tip
Don't Peek!
How do dogs say "hi" in dog language?

A.  eye contact, direct approach
B.  indirect approach, no eye contact, sniffing
C.  Sniffing, indirect approach, eye contact
D.  Rolling over and peeing
E.  Shaking paws ... text messaging

answerIf you chose "c", bravo!  The typical greeting ritual for dogs contains many ingredients incudling the following elements:

1.  Eye Contact: The difference between people and dogs is that the "staring" time is shorter, about 1-second.  Until the relationship is perceived safe and trusting, half a second would be better.
2.  Indirect Approach:  Opposite of attack, this is a neutral stance.  A hunter aiming at a prey would go directly for it.  Dogs are usually polite and signal to each other, indirectly, with side approach, circling, then perhaps play-bow.
3.  Nose-Nose:  A key element of greeting, the most important information is exchanged via the nose.  The nose is the most powerful sense for the dog.  It is a dog's way of "getting to know & remember you."  In a sense, they can also form their associations (opinions) about each other.  Dogs who have been well-socialized generally are better greeters.
4.  Sniffing:  Different from nose-nose, dogs sniff ears, side of neck, and the the shoulders.  This are contains a lot of information about the other party's history.  When dogs find something truly interesting, they always roll themselves in it, leaving cakes of it (and the smell) on them.  That's the dog's way of making a photography of something worth memorizing.
5.  More Sniffing:  Rectal area, genitals and rear (ewww):  Dogs do not have an issue with social inhibition, so this is what we witness when most dogs really want to "get naked" and "explore" this new dog.  To dogs it is not offending.  It's a text message for their dog blackberry.

Note:  Many elements like early socizliation, human intervention, and individualism play a role in how dogs-greet-dogs.  Rolling over & peeing, for example, in particular circumstances, would be appropriate if the dog was trying to commuicate "I'm a worm, submissive, and you are the boss.  It's okay with me."  There are levels of behavior for everything, and a plethora of books and dvds.  Go sniffing ....
