HORIZONS OF FOCUS

2009 is an historical year.  Our nation welcomed a new President, Barack Obama, and a renewed hope for positive change.  He has a tough job that makes managing a small non-profit seem like a joyride. It has inspired me.

One of the many lessons I've learned in 2008 from meeting with several non-profit business managers is that whether big or small, local or global, ALL BUSINESSES need similar tools to succeed.

Whether republican or democrat, rescue or homeless shelter, pet-assisted therapy or global fortune 800 company, managing a business requires focus, leadership and knowing where to expend your energy on a day-to-day basis.  It's a balancing act that needs to include personal / spiritual renewal.  Okay, so how do we fit all this in without feeling like Olive-Oil twisting ourselves into knots.

One solution is to take advantage of the many resources available.  .

Explore David Allen's Making it Work.  His management tools gives us permission to hold onto our cherished pens and pencils, while making sense of the plethora of e-mails and messages (oftentimes babbling) that we get everyday.

Marketing tools are only as good as you use them.  My renewed favorite is "delete", "sorry-no", "what's in it for us" and "I don't know".

David Allen's Making it Work is a little different.  I've had to simplify even my OPIUM thinking (organize, plan, implement the plan, understand plans need to be flexible and make the friggin change).

Discover, explore and capture this for yourself.  You have the choice.  It does require more than reading the first page, but you can actually bounce around the book reading a page a day.

Horizons of Focus helps you capture what really is important and where to place your daily stores of energy.  At the very least play the GTDquiz.  It gives you an idea of where your management skills are at the moment.  Enjoy the Journey~

Friends of NEPP - Fund Raising

New England Pet Partners glides into 2009 with hopes for more qualified teams to visit hospitals, nursing facilities, schools and libraries. Our goal is to reduce costs for team training and registration.

Beyond our Board of Directors, Advisors, Mentors and teams (registered and in training) we are looking for "key" fund-raising opportunities and sponsors.

If you like to sponsor NEPP, please call 603-635-3647.  For a minimum donation of $50.00 (Level 1) we will proudly add you to our web site.

Any of the BOD's are welcome to hear from you Board of Directors.

Clarity & Control

If you aren't yet at the point of clarity, then make that your first goal.  It's a big waste of time to go through life being unclear about what you want.  Most people wallow way too long in the state of "I don't know what to do."  They wait for some external force to provide them with clarity, never realizing that clarify is self-created.  The universe is waiting on you, not the other way around.  It's going to keep waiting until you finally make yp your mind.  Waiting for clarity is like being a sculptor staring at a piece of marble, waiting for the statue within to cast off the unneeded pieces.  Do not wait for clarity to spontaneously materialize---grab a chisel and get busy!   ---Steve Pavlina
