| ONE EASY TRICK TO GET THEIR ATTENTION |
The trick is to look at your sales letter or webcopy--or any text intended to persuade a reader--and eliminate that first paragraph. We all fall into the trap our English teachers set for us: the notion that we need an introduction. General statements like, "Rising fuel costs and a general weakening of the economy are driving companies to look for cost-savings measures" might be appropriate in a news article, but in a marketing piece, they don't convey any valuable information. In marketing pieces, introductions discourage interest and lead to the loss of a significant percentage of your busy audience. These readers immediately delete the email, toss the letter or hit the 'back' button and move on to more pressing matters. I've reviewed too many websites where the meat of the message--the most valuable information about how the company actually helps its customers--is in the last paragraph of a sub-nav page, where the average reader is unlikely to ever see it. The best approach is to write a complete first draft and then go back and delete the first paragraph. In some cases, you may find you've buried the benefit even deeper and need to delete more.

ARE YOU SURE YOU NEED A PRESS RELEASE?
A release in itself almost never gets press. Without media contacts, it will sit unopened in the inbox of every journalist you send it to. These are good reasons to write a press release: 1. You have good press relationships and/or can spend time doing all the follow-up calls required to improve the odds your release will get picked up. 2. You're ready to hire a PR professional to take care of item 1. In this case, she'll want to write the release herself. 3. You're posting the release on your website. Your only purpose is to provide information about your company to readers of your site, and you're not concerned about getting press. 4. You're ready to use a do-it-yourself online wire service. Services like PRWeb.com and BusinessWire.com charge by the release. Doing some research on optimizing press releases and using one of these services can boost your website's search rankings. And you may get some press and/or attention from bloggers if the story is relevant and interesting to a particular audience. |
