Greetings!
During November, my musings tend to get a bit long winded (fair warning) because late October/November is filled with "stuff" that most of you enjoy hearing about - Halloween, My son's birthday adventures and the legendary Thanksgiving turkey story.
If those things don't interest you, you'll also find this month's article, "Crickets Or Roar of the Crowd, Which Describes Your Networking Results?", my Networking Tip of the Month, a special gift from a client of mine to you - AND a birthday sale in honor of my son's 14th birthday. <whew>
The bad news is that my musing for this month is already a novella. The good news is that mid November is the issue that all of you anticipate with wild excitement.
Yes! It's the annual issue where I share the worlds wildest holiday turkey cooking adventure, complete with roof high flames. This is my most requested and remembered issue every year. Don't miss it.
Till then, Please Enjoy!

Crickets or The Roar of the Crowd - Which Describes Your Networking Results?
|
|
At this point in the year, most of us are looking to see if what we've been doing this past year has worked.
Of course you also need to review your marketing and networking to see what your ROI (return on investment) has been.
So. Crickets or loud roar?
What I mean by crickets is silence, zero activity. And it's important to note that just because you are busy, doesn't mean your networking is working for you. For most people, work expands to fit the time allotted. OK, so you are busy. How much revenue is being generated by your networking efforts?
So how do you measure your networking ROI?
Alot of networking groups tell you that if you make back your financial investment, that's a good return on your investment. But is it really?
Let's say your networking group costs $300 per year to join. (Hey that's way cheaper than a yellow page ad!) Should you be happy when you make $600 back? That's double your investment. What about $1200? Or $2000? Would that be a good ROI?
I say NO!
The reason why? - Your TIME investment. The one thing you can't buy back - is your time.
When figuring out if your networking group is really giving you a good return, consider the following:
1. The annual membership fees - anywhere between $100 and $1000 per year depending upon the group.
2. The meeting fees. - Oh sure you paid the annual fees, do you also have to pay dues for the room? for lunches? What about fundraisers, special events, fines or penalties? Always consider the worst case scenario when estimating how much this costs you.
3. The TIME investment. It takes TIME to form relationships and most groups have some kind of attendance policy. Consider - how long does it take you to GET to the meeting? How long is the meeting? How many times per week? How many individual 1 - 2 - 1 meetings should you be doing per week to get the results promised?
Now while I don't agree with having an "hourly rate," because that just sets you up to trade time for dollars, I do believe you should have a sense of what your time is worth.
So, if my time is worth $250 per hour and realistically I need to spend at least 12 hours per month being with this group, I need to make around $36,000 + membership fees PER YEAR to get a good ROI.
So if your hourly rate is $25 per hour in that group you're looking at $3,600. $100 = 14,400, well you can do the math.
Did you know that in BNI the average "seat" is worth $27,000 per year (meaning that's the average members make). When you do the math, that's an eye opener. Bear in mind this is the AVERAGE - meaning people like the mortgage broker and the real estate person will make significantly more. Many will make significantly less, depending upon the price point of their item or service.
I am not saying those numbers are impossible and I am not trying to slam BNI or any other networking group. I just want you to be AWARE of the potential ROI in the grand scheme of things.
Now there are some ways to increase your results in a group like that. I often talk about them. Things like knowing who your target market and strategic alliances are can help you to accomplish your revenue goals in a group like that. When you have stellar elevator speeches and laser focused 1 - 2 - 1 meetings these kinds of groups can make networking and marketing easy for you. And of course feel free to ask me for help if you need it. (FYI my 2 best ebooks are on sale in the side bar to the right.)
So what if you've read this and are a bit shocked and unhappy with your networking results. What else can you do?
You could go to educational or self development workshops and seminars. The strategy here is to go to the most expensive ones you can afford that interest you.
Why?
Because the more people are willing to invest in themselves, the more likely you will find people who get networking and strategic alliances, are qualified to find you clients, maybe by joint venturing and who might be willing to spend money themselves.
You could join or start a mastermind group. This is a group of either a few or many business people who meet specifically to help each other be successful by suggesting various resources, opportunities or strategies.
Or you could look for a group that is filled with potential strategic alliances for you. A mover could join a group where Realtors meet, get on the calendar and speak about what makes them trustworthy and reliable. A consultant who works with fortune 1000 companies could join a networking group of executive assistants. If you teach social networking, join a social networking group or groups like Facebook or Twitter. Do you see how this could work for you?
Remember you are the average of the 5 people or groups you spend the most time with. If the majority of the members of your networking group can best be described as "not for profit" (and they aren't a charitable organization) then perhaps it's time to move on.
Be with what you aspire to be. If you are always the leader or the strongest member of your group, find someplace where you're not the biggest fish in the pond.
Remember networking isn't about your ego or feeling important. It's not necessarily about playing leadership roles in every group you join. Sometimes it's not even about growing your business.
Sometimes networking is about putting yourself in the position to grow YOU. And, after all, aren't YOU your most valuable asset anyway?

| Miss Karen's Monthly Musing - Of Halloween, Captain Underpants, Birthdays, Clogged Drains and Stinky Hockey Equipment
|
Halloween 2009! Typical craziness around here. There was a hockey game in San Jose (which they lost) and Stephen had a party to attend right after. Dressed as Slash (again), Stephen and his friends spent a warm fall evening making their usual sugary haul.
The next morning at hockey practice we learned that several team members had also gone out for treats all dressed as Captain Underpants. Now for those of you who don't know who that is, you COULD probably guess, but Captain Underpants is a children's graphic novel about a school principal who is hypnotized by a hypno-right out of a cereal box by two students. When he is "under the spell" he goes out to fight crime in his underpants and a cape. So imagine if you will, three 13/14 year old boys out trick or treating in their underpants, wearing red blankets - and one wearing cowboy boots. Man, I wish I had a video camera to tape the faces of the people gazing on that image when opening the door! Good thing it was a warm evening. On another note, it's finally happening today. My son is 14. Yes November 5th is his big day. He's pretty excited. He's been singing a song he made up "you'll be afraid of my birthday list" for weeks. When I saw it. I WAS afraid. That's why I am having a sale. More on that below. Finally, two heros stand out in this past month's mayhem. First, Kevin with Diablo Rooter. We have semi-annual root problems with our drain. For the second time in as many years, Diablo Rooter rescued us. Kevin came when he said, cost WAY less than the big box rooters and had the whole thing done in 15 minutes. If you are in the East Bay, I highly recommend them. In fact, I would never call anyone else. They don't have a website, but you can check them out on YELP Tell them Karen Frank sent you. Hero no. 2 would be Ray Kellam of Armourlabs.com. For those of you who have been with me since the beginning of this newsletter, you might remember that I used a hockey equipment cleaning service as an infomercial example. At the time there was no such service in the area and, well you don't want to know what my garage smelled like. Now one of my son's old hockey coaches has graduated from college, gotten married and is a budding entrepreneur. If you have someone who plays sports and their equipment stinks - check out their website.
For old times sake here is that infomercial with Coach Ray's real information included.
Stinky, smelly sports equipment.
Did you know that smelly hockey equipment is filled with
bacteria that can make everyone on the team sick? Just one cut or scrape can be
infected by disease-ridden gear.
But who wants that stuff in their washing machine at
home? Armour Labs disinfects and deodorizes even the nastiest smelling
equipment and makes sports gear safe. I'm looking for chiropractors or sports
injury therapists who work with hockey, lacrosse or football teams.
I'm Ray Kellam with Armour Labs, because your
nose really does know clean. Till next time, Karen

Sometimes things just click between me and a client. That's what happened with Barbara Musser. Although she and I have only known each other a short time (in the grand scheme of things) she's become a very important person in my life. The work that she does is very powerful and groundbreaking. I know from personal experience that what she does has a profound impact and she is one of the few people I know who I can honestly say has changed my life and will probably continue to do so. When I heard that she was offering a complimentary teleclass introducing some of the deep work she does to the public, I was so excited because I couldn't wait to offer it to you, my private clients and subscribers. If you have ever "done it all right" without the results you want, I encourage you to be on this call. If you've ever been to a workshop and had that "workshop high" that just fades away, here's your answer as to why and how to have the breakthroughs that you're looking for at those workshops. Your only risk is your time, about an hour. I usually don't make promises about other people's work - I promise Barbara will change the way you think about yourself, money and business forever.Check out her class here.

money, even though they are doing everything "right," This friend avoids
certain rooms in their own house, and since they've moved, they just can't
figure out why they don't sleep well. This tele-class was designed just for them.
Please reserve November18, 2009 at 4:00pm, pst. Kathryn will delve into some of the myths around this ancient
practice and give solid facts that even the most skeptical people will
appreciate. During this hour, you'll discover:

Networking Tip of the Month
|

Are You Playing "Rock Paper, Scissors" With Your Networking?
Imagine 2 - 6 year old boys. Each has a pile of action figures. Both of them want some of the others' pile, but no one wants to share first.
After a few mean spirited exchanges, the boys decide to see who will go first by using the complex and sophisticated game of "rock paper scissors" or "Ro Sham Bo" in Japanese.
In the end, neither gets what he wants because neither boy can agree who gets the "good" toy first.
Is this how you do networking?
No really.
It's pretty bizarre when you have two business people in the same room BOTH of whom want to be the first one to 'get.' Sometimes one will give an "iffy" lead or referral in order to "get" the other to reciprocate with something - anything - that might make them some money.
Sound familiar?
This becomes especially obvious in the follow up appointment - or rather the 'zen' follow-up appointment.
What happens here is that at the networking meeting, both agree that there should be a follow-up meeting. But the minute something more important comes up, the meeting is postponed. This happens ad nauseum until both parties neglect to make that final follow up call and so they never meet.
Is this any way to do business?
Do you think this never actually happens?
Ok, I am going to be a little "in your face" here:
You might think that this is most prevalent in casual networking groups. What I've found is it happens most in one person per profession groups and groups that have regular meetings.
So here's the bottom line. Be aware that networking groups attract members by telling them about what they will get out of being a member. That's how they make money and stay in business.
What this does though, is set up the expectation that you WILL get from the group. Subconsciously you give in order to get, rather than giving with no expectation of return.
This creates a culture of "needy networkers" - or the adult equivalent of 2 - 6 year old boys with a pile of action figures.
Sometimes giving means meeting with someone and having no idea if the two of you will ever be able to do business together , but you BOTH have the intention of figuring out how to help each other grow your businesses FIRST. And growing someone's business doesn't necessarily mean becoming their client.
You know better. Do you DO better? Do the people in your group do better?
I'll repeat a theme from last month - How you do anything is how you do everything.
