Networking Article - Will Rubbing Two Elbows Together Create Spontaneous Referrals?

In a recent blog post Dr. Ivan Misner hits the nail on the head. Oh sure if you go to networking events and hang out long enough, eventually a referral may drop from the sky into your lap.

But just hanging out isn't enough.  I think that's why so many people may feel that networking "doesn't work."  Instead of coming from a place of relationship building they come from a place of entitlement. 

"Well, I joined the group and paid my money and do my 30 second elevator speech at every meeting - where are the referrals?"

Whether you are in a group that meets regularly or not the old "VCP" model (visibility, credibility, profitability) is important to understand.  For more on that topic and to read Dr. Misner's article click here.

Networking Tip of the Month
Averages

You are the average of the 5 people (or groups) that you spend the most time with.

So what does that have to do with networking?

What is the quality of the networking you are doing?

What caliber are the people who attend the networking events you attend?

Unless you are me, it's probably not your job to teach them how to be better networkers.

Bottom line is if you are going to events and you spend the entire time listening to other people's "pitches" you may be in the wrong group.

And of course I KNOW you don't go out selling and begging for business - because you're paying attention to Networking News!

If the events you go to feel like a hunter/gatherer's event filled with needy networkers - STOP. It may be time to rethink things.

Also towards that end - if you are feeling compelled to offer discounts to the people in your group to "help them out" are you really just in a group where "not for profit" describes most of the businesses?

Ok that may sound a little harsh, but can you see the truth in that statement?

If you're just getting started, then probably any networking group will do because you need to get some practice and who knows, you never know who knows who.

If, however you've been "out there" for years and you notice that your business is vastly more successful than those in your group or that you seem to "get it" much more than everyone else, it may be time to switch venues.

Remember networking gold? Events where people pay BIG BUCKS to attend? These events are typically self development seminars not "networking meetings."

When you're ready to up the ante, when you want to exponentially improve your networking results, make the switch to educational events.

Maybe one day you can become a speaker...and then you can network with the speakers.  Talk about power networking.
