They say
that everything happens for a reason (or some variation thereof) and I have to
agree. Recently I've been faced with a long parade of clients who are
brilliant in their own right and working themselves to death!
Over and over I've been saying it - "If you didn't have to work for
money what would you do instead?" And the answer is always NOT what their
business is, or at least in the way they've been doing it.
What I finally realized is that the Universe has been using every trick the
book to make me see that I've been pretty much doing the same thing!
I was
getting down right frustrated that I was "doing everything right", and not
getting the results I wanted - heck I teach this stuff - and it's been working
great for my students - and if you've been on my list for any length of time, you've
seen the amazing testimonials.
But still
things were just not monetizing for me the way I wanted and so I defaulted to
my old pattern- just work harder - even though I KNOW that working hard doesn't
work.
If I had "suddenly
become ridiculously wealthy" immediately after David Neagle's ERS in March, If
I had a bigger bucket of money to just buy whatever I want whenever I wanted
it, I'd have missed out on some really important lessons:
The broken down dryer (and the total electrical re-wire needed to replace it
with a "modern" dryer) taught me to get outside every day, listen to the birds
and smell the wind as I hang up laundry - AND rejoice in the wonderful
"line dried" fragrance that clothes get. I had forgotten.
The dead
microwave oven taught me that water boils just as quickly on the stove and that
it's OK to get a pot dirty to make hot cocoa. And the cocoa tastes so much
better.
Paying attention
to Freecycle got me a brand new living room by helping me release and old couch
and the clutter that was OK in that room because "the couch is not presentable
for company anyway." Just a dumb excuse for allowing the living room to become "indoor
storage"
I realized
how much I missed Martha Stewart Living and my other "nesting" magazines - and I
Forgot how much I LOVE Halloween and it's
coming up!
And the
point of all of this? The moment - and I
mean the moment - that I got the lesson - that I realized that all the busyness
was distracting me from the things I truly love - baking, scrapbooking, being
in the garden, reading and just hanging out with my son while he hits yet
another home run on MLB 2007 - In that moment, all of the things I wanted to
manifest in my life showed up.
Suddenly I was literally emailed the way to do a
project that had been giving me fits for months. I found a way to joint venture
with someone I admire greatly and help him get out of a personal pickle. The
way to have the lifestyle and the business I REALLY want fell into my lap
within the period of 1 week - and I believe it's because I am finally ready to
live that lifestyle and be that business owner.
Had I had
buckets of money, none of those things would have happened on the deep level
they did for me. I'd have just become very excited, blown most of the money on
stupid stuff and continued to work harder to get more (gotta love the
subconscious mine eh?). None of the
magical things that really truly needed to happen would have - And I would be
wasting another year of my life in front of my computer screen telling my son
after school, "no, sorry I am still working"
Talk about
a wake up call. And what a wonderful gift that lesson was.
I am telling
you this for a reason. It's not because I love to talk about myself and it's
not because I need to share any "dirty laundry." (OK that figuratively not literally
- ha!)
It's
because I want you to hear this and understand where it is coming from - If you have discovered that you are no closer
to your lifelong goals than you were a year ago, if you are working as many
hours as you can stand and still don't have enough cash flow - if you are
putting something important off because you are "too busy," maybe, just maybe
the Universe is trying to tell you something too.
"If you
didn't have to work for money, If you could do anything you wanted with your
time, what would it be?
Food for
thought.
