Greetings!

I've been a busy beaver these past two weeks!Karen Frank Headshot  I've posted a couple of videos to my blog, (check them out), given two workshops, and been to two more.  I really truly need a vacation.

For a full list of the exploits including links to the recordings for different presentations I've been part of, see the "where's Karen" section below.

Last night I listened to a preview call with
Gina Ratliffe and David Neagle. I've known for awhile that he's been "brewing something big."  And like everything of David's that I've experienced, this call blew my socks off.

I realized that the most important thing I can tell you about in this issue is his preview call coming up next week, July 8th.

If you click on the link under "Don't miss this" to the right you'll be able to register for this call. Hope to "see you on the call"

Finally, I've created an article about an uncomfortable networking situation I recently experienced.

Enjoy and have a profitable month!

Miss Karen's Musing:
Twitter, Squidoo and a Blog - Oh my!

Things are looking up!

My hockey boy has headed to Lake Tahoe for a week with one of his school buddies and my unemployed W-2 Husband has submitted a bid for  HUGE job with the Government!

Cross your fingers - Maybe the house will be quiet again soon!

June was such a busy month.  I did 3 interviews (links to those in where's Karen below), 4 live presentations, and went to six networking functions - AND took on several wonderful new clients to work on Marketing Copy and Newsletter management. - WOW!

Fortunately, the rest of the summer looks like it is going to provide me with time to work on my super secret new project. I can't tell you much about it yet BUT if you go to my blog and check out the videos there, you'll get a hint.

One thing I did was attend a rehearsal for Adryenn Ashley's tech day.  This was very cool because she did an incredible job of walking people through the whole social media thing (like Squidoo, Twitter, Facebook etc). It was very hands on and most of us left with a clear understanding of exactly HOW the heck to get our websites to rank  higher. In fact one participant went from being no place to being no. 3 in an hour using what Adryenn taught.  She's going to create a simple do-able format for us 'normal people' and limiting it to 15 people, so if you want more info, please email me and I can get you what you need.

In sports news: Next month hockey season begins anew and we're hoping for a fun, less demanding experience than the last three years. I'll let you know where he "lands." Also, Stephen has already received two scouting camp offers, so with any luck, he'll get a chance to go and experience that world soon too.

Well, I'd best take advantage of the peace and quiet that is two family members with better things to do than lurk, and get some articles done for you.

Til next time,

Karen "soon to be hockey mom again" Frank!

I love hearing success stories like this one from Thornton.  Keep them coming!

"I like to refer to Karen Frank as a marketing maven, a networking guru, and linguistic alchemist all in one.

She identifies the essential elements of your products and services and helps you talk about them (in person or in print) in a way that helps your potential customers understand why they need to do business with you - right away.

Before I worked with Karen I was experiencing some challenges around getting clients in this economy. Using some of the strategies Thornton Prayershe taught me during her platinum package, I was able to generate $5,000 with a single one hour teleclass! This was completely unexpected. Wow. What she teaches really works!

When you're ready to find the right expert to get your message out, and connect with new clients quickly, Karen is the one to turn to."

Who are you "being"in your business?
by Karen Frank

I was recently approached by someone in a networking group I was visiting who wanted advice for handling a somewhat delicate situation. He had overheard something that disturbed him which was said by another member of this group.

In this person's zeal and passion for solving the problem she solved, she was using language that could potentially offend the very people who need her help the most!

What's worse is, she was overheard by others, who might have potentially been clients, but now will not because they felt what was said was offensive.

"Nobody wants to do business with Lazy People, that's why they need me." is what was said.

<<ouch>>

I am not going to get into a long discussion about how other people can't make anyone feel a certain way, but I will say this. One of the  gold nuggets I've picked up along the way is that your reaction comes from inside.

I'll prove it.  If you are a thin person who is completely satisfied with your weight and someone walked up to you and said, "Wow, you're fat" you would think they were wrong (or jealous) and blow off the comment with little or no emotional reaction to it. That same comment said to someone who believes they are fat (whether or not they actually are) would most likely create a response of hurt and shame in the person who is trying to lose weight.  Same comment, different results.

That being said (and setting that totally aside for a moment) Language is so important.

Had our original "anti lazy person's" goal been to weed out lazy people from her client base, that would have been one thing. But instead it was her perception of the demographic of her target market - The very people she wanted to reach.

Lest you think this was a "bad person," she was passionate about her craft. She felt being lazy was a life and death situation because her experience of it was that this was true. In fact her mother was a "lazy person" and as a result had a horribly messy house which resulted in her isolation as an older person and eventual death because no one ever visited and when she injured herself, no one was there to help.

So her motivation was very noble. The language, not so much.

Nor was this person an unsaavy marketer. At every networking event during the introductions she did a good job of describing what she did.

Most likely, the problem came from not really understanding what her target market is thinking and only seeing the problem she solved for them from her point of view.

Who she was being was not alligned with who would attract her perfect client. And that explained perfectly why she was struggling to find business.

Remember, that marketing and networking is more than just the problem you solve, who your niche may be and the words that come out of your mouth.  To be of most service to your target market is to develop the kind of "beside manner" that they would appreciate most. Remember platinum beats gold every time The platinum rule is treat your clients how THEY would like to be treated - NOT as you would want to be treated.

Learn who your ideal clients are.  Learn to describe them as just a single person. You might even want to give your niche a proper name like Betty, or Michael and learn how they think.

Once you understand how they think, feel and talk as well as what motivates them - and what de-motivates them, you'll be well on your way to finding more of your ideal client.

And the advice I gave the observer? Straight out of our local BNI culture.  Ask that person - "If you were doing something that might make it more difficult to refer you or do business with you, would you want me to tell you?" - And then let them decide.

I'll be curious to find out what happened.

Networking Tip of the Month
Social Networking - It Ain't Any Different!

Maybe it's just me.

I've recently started to "get in to" the whole social media thing and frankly, I am shocked!

So about Twitter -

Here's a whole new SOCIAL frontier and what do people do? They behave badly and try to sell stuff ad nauseam - and THEN try to sell us on them being social media experts.

Sorry. but this whole thing is so new and evolving, I am not sure anyone qualifies as an expert.

So here's what I have noticed.

People on Twitter seem to fall into several categories.

1. The Testers They check it out, follow a few friends, get 25 followers or so and then get bored and quit. "This doesn't work, it's a waste of time."

This is like the people who go to networking Events once or twice and get bored and quit "This stuff doesn't work."

Tip no. 1 - Social networking is ALSO about relationships -even though you're just typing words, there are people on the other end of your screen - real live actual people - who knew?

2. The Blatant  Self Promoters. They have discovered a new way to mass promote their stuff.

Every day I get like 20 direct messages that "try" to seem friendly, but mostly are promoting their stuff.  I don't know them yet. It goes something like "Hey, thanks for the follow check out my website." And it's always some kind of a lead generator thing.

I even had one guy get mad at me because I didn't see the relevance of his MLM "op" to the string he was participating in. Turns out most of his tweets were random self promo's about his MLM thing.

"Unfollow!! Unfollow!"

This is like the people who go to networking events and pass out business cards and talk about themselves.

Tip no. 2: You're not going to find ANY business and people will run away from you if you spend all your time talking about yourself and none of your time listening - just like a live event, social networking is about listening and helping.

3. The Insider's Club. These are people who are mainly tweeting with a few friends and ignore any conversations directed at them.

Hmmm. so you're on a public forum and unless I know you personally I am invisible?

Tip  no. 3 - It's polite to respond when spoken to.  Just like a live event, if you are in a public place and someone has a question or comment and joins the conversation - for pete's sake help them out.  You never  know who knows who.

4. Connectors. These are people who are tweeting value.  Maybe it's a great quote. Maybe it's good solid information or maybe they are helping others make connections in the real world.

Tip no. 4 - The most successful networkers grow their business by helping other people.  If you look at Twitter or at a live event, the ones who have discovered the amazing world of connecting people to what they need next are usually the ones with the best reputations, the most connections - Oh and by the way, the most resources.  Just like at a live event, these are the "golden rolodexes" - the people you want to know.

Final thoughts - Twitter (and most social networking) is still very new.  You'll see rants about all kinds of things, like "I hate follow Friday."  Most of it is just noise. I recommend just using common sense.  Offer value, help people, don't run with scissors and play nice with others.

I hope to see you on Twitter. I'm karenfrank43.
