Greetings!
I don't know about you, but I am actually kind of relieved that the holidays are finally here.
The last two weeks of November were more than a little stressful (for more about that read my musing below).
Anyway, as we wind down to the end of the year, I have a couple of treats for you. First, I have a fantastic call for you with Carrie Greene.
Carrie has a unique approach to "organization." it really rings true for us entrepreneurs especially since most of us live with "bright shiny object syndrome" on a daily basis.
I am very fortunate to be interviewing her for you on December 8th. Details are below. If you've ever had a momentary (or longer) panic because you couldn't find it (think tax season) this will be the perfect call for you to hear.
And now - on to the articles. Please enjoy!

| Karen's Monthly Musing
|
It all started right after Halloween actually. I knew that the Christmas music in the grocery store on November 1st was a sign.
As Karen Carpenter belted out "I'll Be Home For Christmas", I wandered through the Megamart thinking to myself, OK it's not even Thanksgiving yet - and I am already sick of Christmas.
By the time Mid November finally rolled around, I had done it. I had learned to completely ignore the holiday audio intrusions.
Then it happened.
As you might know, I am manager of my son's hockey team (yeah, in my spare time). 30 minutes before we had to leave for the airport, I got a call from the head coach. He's not coming to Denver with the team. In fact he's not going anywhere with the team. In fact - he quit.
So here I was having to figure out if the team could even play once we got to Denver - because now there's no coach. Aaaaauuuugggghhhhh!
To make a very long story short, it all worked out in the end - although as of this newsletter, we still have no "official" coach for the team.
The team went 0 and 5 (meaning they lost all of their games) but while I was trapped in my own frustration, my son, bless his heart, told me "Mom, I know you're stressed out, but I am having a great time. I love Denver. This is a great hotel. I love the pool table and I am having fun playing hockey."
<<Ding!>>
Oh yeah, THAT's what this was all about. In that moment I realized that in spite of everything that had happened, I was truly grateful.
Grateful that had a place to stay that was warm, food to eat, nice hockey families to hang out with and when we come home, it really will be time for the holidays.
What a wonderful Thanksgiving after all.
So for those of you who actually knew who/what "Slash" is, here's the photo of Stephen as Slash for Halloween.
Til next time,
Karen |

Getting Organized? Why Bother?
|
|
By Carrie
Greene, CarrieThru Coaching & Organizing Services
How many times have you told yourself that you
really should get
organized?
You may have
promised yourself that you'll do it
and you've even set aside whole days
or weekends to finally get the job
done.
Somehow, the day comes and goes but you're still not organized.
You know that getting organized is going to take a
lot of time and effort, so the question is: "Why bother?"
Getting organized is a very personal thing. Just
like there is no one system that will work for everyone there is no universal
reason to be organized. However figuring out why it is important to YOU can
serve as the push you need to start you going and keep you motivated.
When I start working with a client, one of the
first things I want to find out is what drove them to hire me. Why spend the
time and effort? Why is it so important for them?
Some of the answers I get are along the lines of:- I don't like
the way my office looks.
-
I can't find
anything in my piles.
-
I can't keep
my projects straight.
-
I'm losing
money.
What I have found is that the truth usually lies
much deeper and generally, after a short conversation, we hit upon the real
reasons for getting organized. It usually has very little to do with how the
space looks.
The man, who
didn't like the way his office looked went on to tell me that he frequently met
with clients but feared bringing them to his office. He believed that the
condition of his office must be a reflection of the quality of his work. If his office is a mess then he must not be
good at what he was doing. Was he really
any good at his job?
The woman, who
told me that she couldn't find anything in her piles, had recently started a
business. She wanted to gain control of her schedule and spend more time with
her family. Only now she was working more hours than ever before. She found it frustrating
and maddening to spend the time she wanted to be spending with her family
searching through piles of "important" papers. Now she is wondering how she
could have been so stupid to have believed she could pull this off.
It turns out
that the man who couldn't keep his projects straight had recently been forced
to call a valuable client who was three months behind in her payment. The client
swore that she had sent the check months ago but agreed to send another one. Three days later the original check was
found, in another client's file. Now
he's left wondering...what else is misfiled? Can he trust himself? Is he really
up to running this business?
The woman who
told me she is losing money is right. She frequently misses due dates, is late
to meetings, losses important papers along with names and phone numbers of
potential clients. Now she's getting a reputation that she can't be relied upon.
What's worse is that she's starting to believe what they are saying about her.
How can she run a business when she can't rely on herself?
Your reason for spending time and energy to get yourself
organized is deeply personal. What is really in it for you?

A Holiday Poem
|
 |
'Twas the night before Solstice when at the great hall
Not a person was stirring, they were all at the mall.
The snacks were arranged on the table with care
In hopes that some networkers soon would be there.
When out in the parking lot arose such a sound
Like 500 pirates whose ships ran aground.
But I knew what it was - they were all right on time
The Chambers of Commerce, B2B, BNI,
LeTip and Csix to name just a few
Plus entrepreneurs and small businesses too.
The networkers all had arrived in a flash
And the party began - a right jolly old bash.
They were all dressed in suits except for a few
Shaking hands, passing cards, saying "what do you do?"
Their eyes how they twinkled, their voices so merry!
They were helping each other while they drank Tom and Jerry.
A curious thing took place there that night.
It was farming not hunting and doing what's right.
To those who attended, not one promotion
was made to another in the happy commotion.
The party went on for an hour or two,
Then off they all went with connections anew.
And I heard them exclaim as they drove out of site,
Happy networking to all and to all a good night! |
