Miss Karen's Musing

Wednesday morning, I woke up to a shock!

It was a typical day - except - for some reason my son was humming and singing to himself BEFORE school.

Hmm. What's up, I thought.  A moment later my 12 year old sauntered into the room and announced, " Bye Mom.  I'm going to school. When I get back I'll be a seventh grader."

Say What?!?

It was one of those "Holy Cow - when did you get so old" moments (smattered liberally with OMG I now have a pre-teenager in the house with nothing to do for 3 months panic attacks).

It also is a reminder that Hockey Season begins next month.  It was a nice break while it lasted.

So now that I'm back from back to back educational weekends, I have lots of great new ideas and information that I'll be sharing with you over the summer (pre-teen boy permitting - ha!).  In addition, I'll be sharing some recommendations of places you can go for high quality educational networking opportunities (see side bar for why that's important)

And now, on to the newsletter!

I Went, I Saw, It was AMAZING! - You Should Have Been There!
More on the "Butts in Seats" Seminar

If you received my newsletter last month you saw my "Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut" article about getting "butts in seats".

It talked about a seminar I would be attending presented by Callan Rush and Justin Livingston called Magnetize Your Audience. I endorsed it heavily because I know Callan and I completely trust her ability to deliver on her promises.

Well, guess what? - She did!

While I "already knew" alot of their information (yeah, had to remember to check MY expert hat at the door...) I learned why what I was doing had not been working as well as I would have liked.

I also met some amazing people (you know who you are...) and got to reconnect with some people I hadn't seen for awhile.

Here is what I felt was the most important highlight from the event to help you with YOUR business...

A New Way to Think About Your "Funnel*"

Here's an example of something I "knew" but never thought of in this way.

When you solve the problem you solve for your client, usually the solution creates a new problem.  Here's an example.  When I teach people how to network and they get new clients, one possible problem this creates is how to deal with the reality of all of those clients.

Using the information I learned last weekend, I can now ANTICIPATE that clients will have that experience (because they will - it's only logical).  I can set up my next step in the funnel to let them know that I can also solve their next problem specifically - rather than alluding to it in general.

So rather than telling my students, "Now that you can network I have a system to systematize your day to day operations", I'll say, "Now that you're a better networker and you have all those new clients, you need to systematize some of the things inside your business or you'll be working long hours and exhausting yourself."

Do you see how you could apply this to what you offer?

*In case you missed a past issue, a marketing funnel is your sales process for clients.  To review, picture a funnel. Wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.  At the top are items you offer which are low cost (in both money and time) for your clients.  At the bottom of the funnel are the things that cost the most again in time and money) and are typically purchased by only your very best clients.  In the middle are all the steps (products and services) a client would take to get to the bottom of the funnel.

As an example, this newsletter is at the top of my funnel.  It costs nothing to you and doesn't take much time to read.  The next step down the funnel is my $7 electronic book.  Again, doesn't cost much and provides more value.  Next is the (soon to be discontinued) home study course, then my one day events and at the very bottom I have a six month program for people who want to create informational products (books, CD's Video etc) to create passive income streams.

If you don't have your funnel mapped out, you might take a moment to do that.  As you do think about being strategic in the placement of the items you offer.  In addition to being a higher cost, do they solve a problem that the last product "created?"

Educational Networking

Did you know that one of your most valuable networking opportunities is when you are taking educational or personal development training?

Why?

Because you are more likely to be in a room of like minded people who value educating themselves and also (very likely) have clients who need YOU.

Think about it.  Why do you go to personal development courses?  If you're like me, you understand that your capacity to earn money is in direct proportion to your own personal growth. OK - it took me a long time to figure that one out so don't be embarrassed!

I've also found that when you're in one of those intense trainings, relationships very naturally form and people are drawn to you.

Maybe you get asked to share some information with a partner or maybe you notice someone else struggling in an area you have some expertise in.

Usually during those times you hear stuff like, "I SO need your services" or "I have a sister in Albuquerque who needs you" so networking feels more effortless.

While you should feel good about yourself for having a great conversation about each others' businesses, It's good to remember that those situations are a bit more artificial.

It also doesn't mean that your "super powered brain" has suddenly "cracked the secret networking code" and you can throw everything you've been taught out of the window.  When you get back to your "normal" life, remember to go back to what was working for you.

Here are two more tips for educational networking opportunities.

1. Just like networking at social events, you should NOT try to sell to people you meet directly, but  the opportunity will arise when you can mention what you do.

2. Make notes!  At many of these trainings you'll be in a room with thousands of people over several days.  You are NOT going to remember everyone no matter how brilliant your memory - I promise.

This month at the Millionaire Mind Intensive (more on that next issue),  I tried to remember to note which day I met someone and what we talked about.  It wasn't easy - trust me, but I feel like I have a better handle on who I connected with.

Finally, my opinion is that educational networking is the best and highest use of your time if you're looking to grow your business AND your strategic alliances.  Additionally if you're tempted to sign up for any "programs" offered, factor in to your time and cost estimate the very advanced networking and relationship building that will happen for those in the program - including you when you sign up.

Now you're thinking like a Networking Ninja!!
