September 11, 2012               Coming September 23: MusicFest Vancouver Reprise!
Dear friend of MusicFest Vancouver,

 top
"How do you keep the music playing?
How do you make it last?
How do you keep the song from fading too fast...?"

The lyrics above come from the 1982 film Best Friends, and seem appropriate given the challenge we are facing today. MusicFest Vancouver 2012 was full of wonderful music. It  included seven sold out shows, and received terrific audience response - but not all things that count can be counted, and as MusicFest approaches the end of its fiscal year we find ourselves facing a shortfall.

MusicFest Vancouver Reprise on Sunday September 23 is an opportunity to celebrate and build on the momentum of the recently concluded festival in a day of fundraising concerts. Christ Church Cathedral has generously agreed to offer the use of MusicFest Vancouver's "home base" for three one-hour performances at 3pm, 5pm, and 7pm, one in each of our principal genres: jazz, world and classical. The artists have also generously stepped forward to offer their talent in support of your festival.

As we approach our fiscal year end we are counting on you, our "Best Friends," to demonstrate your continued enthusiasm and support. Please attend one (or all!) of the concerts in MusicFest Vancouver Reprise
on Sunday September 23. Tickets for each show are an affordable $20, and donations in excess of the ticket price will be gratefully accepted and recognized with a charitable receipt. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

We're offering a Super Fan Price: All 3 concerts for $50! This price is only available in advance through the MusicFest Vancouver office. Call 604.688.1031 xt 112 to order yours today!

Individual concert tickets will be available through the MusicFest Vancouver office ( 604.688.1031 xt 112) and at at the door, and we're asking our "Best Friends" to help fill the church by spreading the word about this "3 concerts in 1 day" special event. You can do that now by clicking the "Forward to a Friend" button, or wait till you get to the bottom of the page. (There's another Forward to a Friend button there!)

Over the years MusicFest Vancouver has enjoyed a warm relationship with Cory Weeds' Cellar Jazz Club as a concert venue. It's been the site of great performances by international artists as well as a showcase for the best that Vancouver has to offer. Vocalist Jennifer Scott remembers fondly her own collaboration with the great bop trumpeter Clark Terry given in 2003 under the auspices of MusicFest Vancouver. At 3pm at Christ Church Cathedral we'll welcome some of our favourite jazz alumni who have stepped up to play on behalf of the festival: Cory Weeds, sax; Miles Black, piano; Jesse Cahill, drums; and Rene Worst, bass - plus Jennifer Scott with a ballad or two on behalf of your festival.

One of the great things about MusicFest programming is the opportunity for musical exploration. Whether it's an all-day encounter with accordions, discovering the versatility of a banjo, or unveiling the exotic sound of ancient Oriental instruments, MusicFest Vancouver has boldly gone where your ears may have never gone before, bringing you music from every corner of the world.

As part of our WORLD celebration we've invited another alum, harpist Lori Pappajohn, who is familiar to many for her WinterHarp celebrations.  She'll reach back to the medieval minstrels and bards with a Celtic-infused contribution. Joining in with more music of the Sceptered Isle and beyond will be members of the Elektra Women's Choir, led by Artistic Director Morna Edmundson and featuring pianist Stephen Smith.

Classical at 7pm - September 23 - Christ Church Cathedral

featuring:

Daniel Bolshoy, guitar
Ariel Barnes, cello

Did you miss this year's sold out performance at Pyatt Hall with guitarist Daniel Bolshoy and cellist Ariel Barnes? Here's a chance to get a taste of that and lots more.  We're thrilled to have the most visible face of this year's festival, our "poster boy" Daniel Bolshoy, reprise some of the repertoire featured in his Pyatt Hall performance. His wide-ranging repertoire covers everything from baroque to contemporary, and all of it is brilliantly played.

The music of J.S. Bach is considered so sublime that NASA included it on the Voyager satellites as a part of our collective greeting to rest of the universe. Ariel Barnes will be featured in one of Bach's solo cello suites - and more Bach will round out the programme...watch for further details in upcoming newsletters!
