"How do you keep the music playing?
How do you make it last?
How do you keep the song from fading too fast...?"

As we approach our fiscal year end we are counting on our "Best Friends" to share their continued enthusiasm and support!

Ticket sales account for a relatively small portion of revenue in our overall budget. As a not-for-profit charitable organisation, MusicFest Vancouver depends on people like you: individuals who appreciate live music performances and aren't afraid to show it.

The lyrics above come from the 1982 film Best Friends, and seem appropriate at this time of year. MusicFest Vancouver wrapped up a 12th season filled with memorable musical moments, and from the feedback we have received from you, our patrons and supporters, there was plenty to enjoy at this year's festival.

As Program Director, it would be impossible to for me choose just one highlight. Among the great moments were pianist Kevin Cole's barn-burning Rhapsody in Blue with the VSO; the out of this world sonic adventures of Nordic Voices;  the infectious joy of Pink Martini; the genre-bending banjo of  Jayme Stone; and the rapture of Ravel's La Valse, played as an encore by Philippe Cassard and Franois Chaplin. The repertoire ranged from early music by Gabrieli, to the brand new, with Jeffrey Ryan's The Whitening of the Ox. And who amongst you would have guessed that Michael Dirk's organ recital at Holy Trinity (complete with popcorn and a silent movie) would be one of seven sold-out performances this year! Your individual gift helps ensure this wealth of music keeps playing.
With just a few clicks you can make a single donation or set up a regular monthly contribution. Your support is crucial, welcome, and all receive tax receipts are issued automatically on our behalf through CanadaHelps.org.

Relive Pink Martini: Shaken & Stirred!

Pink Martini CD covers How much fun was that? The Orpheum Theatre was the site of a major party on August 17 as Pink Martini wrapped us in their cool retro performance and swept us away! From start to finish, a near capacity audience was treated to a display of great musicianship, a globetrotting and genre-bending playlist and even a conga line to close the evening to the tune Aquarela do Brasil! Pink Martini blew into town like a tropical breeze, and quickly had the MusicFest Vancouver audience enthralled. As pianist and band leader Thomas Lauderdale quipped, "We love Vancouver, Why don't we come here more often?" The people beside me in the Orpheum had travelled up from Portland, Oregon (Pink Martini's home base), to hear them in a great concert hall setting.

Perhaps you're wondering what that third song was, or on which disc that haunting Croation number can be found? Look no further! We've prepared a pdf of their concert playlist. It also includes links to more information about the band, their discography, and YouTube clips for almost every song they performed that evening!

Click here to download the pdf file and enjoy!
More Music to Enjoy!

Loved Guitar Day? Learn How to Play at the VSO School of Music

VSO School of Music logo The first-ever Guitar Day, a collaboration between MusicFest Vancouver and the VSO School of Music' Guitar Department, presented three back-to-back concerts of guitar music that took place Sunday, August 12, and featured the diversity of music the guitar repertoire encompasses.

Taking place at the state-of-the-art Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Recital Hall at the new VSO School of Music downtown next to the Orpheum Theatre, enthusiastic crowds filled the acoustically-excellent hall to hear the Oberon Guitar Trio, the intimate creations of Ed Henderson and the Brazilian guitar styling of Celso Machado. The day culminated in the sold- out performance of Latin chamber music for cello and guitar, performed by internationally-known guitarist Daniel Bolshoy and cellist Ariel Daniel Bolshoy teaching Barnes.

Bolshoy, who was a featured artist at the festival this year, also directs the thriving Guitar Department at the VSO School of Music. As passionate about teaching as he is onstage in his performances, this Master Guitarist encourages aspiring guitarists to explore the rich world of guitar music through private lessons, playing in the School's Guitar Ensemble, working in chamber groups of other instrumentalist and vocalists, and participating in Master Classes of visiting artists. Under Bolshoy's guidance, students at the School also have the opportunity to perform publicly on one of the school's student recitals throughout the year.

With the advent of MusicFest Vancouver's Guitar Day at the VSO School of Music and the interest in this versatile instrument it has inspired, the guitar has a found a large, enthusiastic audience and a new home in Vancouver, at the VSO School of Music.

Upcoming Concerts at Capilano U

Capilano University students with Mark Eisenman (centre)
L to R, Pianists Leo Bae & Matt Choboter, with jazz clinician Mark Eisenman, Mi Li Hong, drums and Spencer Hall, bass
Many of you caught our Mark Eisenman: Jazz Piano 101 session at Christ Church Cathedral. This free event was part of the Industrial Alliance Inside the Music Series and featured Mark working with some very talented students (pictured) from the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University, which is also home to the North Shore Credit Union Centre.

Mark was able to explain how jazz improvisation is like a game of hockey, with the tune represented by the rink. "The game slows down drastically if you spend all of your time outside of the boards, chasing stray pucks," he said. "Likewise the enjoyment level suffers if someone turns the net backwards. By knowing the melody, harmony and history of the music, musicians can interact and play. Remember we PLAY music, you don't WORK music!"
