Nordic Voices
Nordic Voices
Nordic Voices is a six-voice a cappella ensemble whose vast repertoire ranges from medieval to modern music.  One of Norway's best-loved ensembles, Nordic Voices has garnered considerable acclaim through frequent radio and television appearances and international touring. We're delighted to showcase them in the glorious acoustic of the Chan Centre at UBC, where their voices can truly soar heavenwards.

The program that the ensemble will sing is titled Ciels, (the French word for skies), but the word also has a poetic association with heaven and paradise. All religions have an idea about a paradise, a better place to come to after an earthbound life. Paradise, or heaven, has been depicted in music through music history and this fascinating program offers examples from the 1300's to today. If you love choral music this is a "must see" concert!

This is the first six concerts in our BMO Main Stage Concerts series. Read about the entire series here.

The dramatic tale of the Firebird as depicted musically by Stravinsky is adapted by Michael Bushnell and interpreted by Vancouver's premiere contemporary music ensemble. Jeffrey Ryan's recent commission The Whitening of the Ox, is inspired by the Zen Buddhist concept of the taming of the disordered mind to reach a state of enlightenment.

Turning Point Ensemble See how these works are interpreted both musically and visually in a multi-media showcase.
Two legends from East and West meet in this exciting program that offers both aural and visual delight in what promises to be one of the most talked about concerts of the festival. Be there to be part of the conversation!

2012 group shot
2012 MusicFest staff
Each issue of our newsletter will introduce a MusicFest Vancouver staff member who will share what c
oncert  they can't wait to hear. This week our Administrative Assistant Paul nash tells us why he's chosen Cristina Braga with Ricardo Medeiros & Sal Ferreras: Harpa Bossa Jazz as the show you HAVE to see!

Paul
Paul

"I love jazz (I worked my way through university playing jazz clubs), and I love singing (I'm a long-time member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir). And lots of the best jazz standards ever written have come from Brazil, from the likes of Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto - even if you don't recognize their names, you'd immediately know many of their songs. (Samba is quite possibly the most infectious music on the planet... it's no coincidence that Brazil is renowned for its fantastic, danceable rhythms and luscious, chromatic harmonies.) So, just wait until you hear Cristina Braga next week! MusicFest Vancouver is lucky to have Cristina in our festival - she's a Brazilian superstar who's managed to turn the harp into a one-person jazz orchestra, while singing delicious samba melodies with just the right quality of smooth and smoky voice that you'd want in bossa nova. Fantástico!!!"
