June 21, 2012    Focus on Vocalists
Dear friend of MusicFest Vancouver,

top Is there anything more musically intimate than a solo vocalist working with a collaborative artist or combo? Our lead article highlights concerts of artists walking the soloist highwire in a range of musical styles from contemporary to classical and cabaret.

It's going to be an amazing festival, so pause your player - mute your phone - attend a concert - and see with your own ears how a live musical performance can move you - it's like you're there!

Five Concerts, Four Amazing Vocal Soloists
'Blaue Augen Hat Das Madchen' by Tyler Duncan and Michael Colvin
'Blaue Augen Hat Das Madchen' by Tyler Duncan and Michael Colvin
A founding member on the faculty of the Vancouver International Song Institute, British Columbia-born and New York-based baritone Tyler Duncan enjoys international renown for bringing consummate musicianship, vocal beauty and interpretive insight to recital, concert and operatic literature. He is featured in:

Sunday, August 12
8pm VANCOUVER PLAYHOUSE

This performance incorporates multi-media components in a compelling musical response to works of the past. Jeffrey Ryan's recent commission is based on The Whitening of the Ox (Inside the Zen Ox Pictures) by Canadian poet K.V. Skene. This extended vocal/instrumental work incorporates 15th-century illustrations by Tensho Shubun of a Chinese fable. Just as an Oxherd domesticates a beast, the series depicts the Zen Buddhist concept representing the taming of the disordered mind and the ultimate attainment of enlightenment. Purchase tickets.

Cristina Braga

Cristina Braga has been to a large extent responsible for showing the world a harp with Brazilian soul and expanding the possibilities of her instrument in Brazilian music, both classical and popular. She is a compelling vocalist with a deep melancholy in her voice that seems specially carved for the compositions of Tom Jobim, Luiz Bonfá, Roberto Menescal and other masters of Música Popular Brasileira. Don't miss her in  Harpa Bossa Jazz!

Christina Braga - Girl from Ipanema

Monday, August 13

 5:30pm  CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

From the tropical beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s, a "new beat" started a musical craze. A sensual mixture of Brazilian rhythms, American jazz and Portuguese lyrics, Bossa Nova became an international sensation, and Stan Getz's 1964 recording of The Girl from Ipanema with João & Astrud Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the US charts! This concert will send you home with a samba in your step! Purchase tickets.

Running a Music Festival is a little like signing up for a Triathlon!

Lots of eyes have been on London recently, what with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the recent Trooping of the Colour ceremony.  Later this summer the London Olympics will be in full swing, including the Triathlon, comprising a 1.5 km swim, cycling for 40 km, and a 10 km run.  Running a Music Festival is a little like signing up for a Triathlon!

We've completed the swim in preparing the season brochure...  we're currently in the bicycle race, as we market and promote the events...and finally there will be a marathon of concerts - 43 events in 13 venues over 10 days, from August 10th -19th in Vancouver! The musical line up is terrific - from a Gershwin Gala, to Guitars, to Gamelan music; from Tangos, to Piano Trios, to Pink Martini.

You can help it all happen of course by purchasing tickets, and by sponsoring a runner for MusicFest Vancouver in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge, on Sunday June 24!

Led by founding Program Director George Laverock, a small but mighty team will pound the pavement this weekend in a half-marathon or 5k run/walk to help bring great classical, jazz and world music events to Vancouver for ten days in August!

Everything raised by the team goes directly to MusicFest Vancouver, sponsoring a member of the team is easy, and you will receive a tax receipt for your full donation. Click here to make your donation.

On behalf of everyone who "runs" MusicFest Vancouver, thanks for your support.

Matty
Assistant is focused on the "2 pianos, 4 hands" concert in our BMO Main Stage series:

"Being a pianist myself, I hold a very special place in my heart for Debussy. It was therefore a no-brainer for me to choose my staff pick of the week;  Deux Pianos: Hommage à  Debussy. Not only is the repertoire absolutely first class but I can hardly wait to hear the flawless interpretations by Philippe Cassard and François Chaplin.

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune - Debussy
Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune - Debussy
One of the headlining works, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faun, is an all-time favourite of mine with its pastoral imagery and quintessential 'Debussy-esque' dreamlike quality. If you'd like to whet your appetite some, I found a little taster of what we have to come when this sensational duo graces the Vancouver Playhouse stage. Enjoy!"
