June 7, 2012    Focus on the Odlum Brown Gala Opening Concert:
Here to Stay: The Gershwin Experience
Dear friend of MusicFest Vancouver,

We've had a great week at the MusicFest Vancouver office. Our Festival Guides arrived (you can see how much physical labour is involved by checking out this photo gallery on Facebook), our festival posters arrived, and we've had a great response to our initial "on sale" announcement, and yesterday our guides went into the mail so they'll be arriving in your mailbox soon!

In this week's newsletter spotlighting the Odlum Brown Gala Opening ConcertProgram Director Matthew Baird shares his personal perspective on why Here to Stay: The Gershwin Experience will be a "not to be missed" event. We are proud to present the Canadian premiere of this spectacular evening of entertainment to launch MusicFest Vancouver 2012, and it could not happen without the support of Odlum Brown Limited which has shared our vision for summer music in this city from the very beginning.

It's going to be an amazing festival, so pause your player - mute your phone - attend a concert - and see with your own ears how a live musical performance can move you - it's like you're there!

Has there ever been a greater team of musical collaborators?

Gershwin portrait
George Gershwin
George and Ira Gershwin created more than 1,000 of the most beloved songs, shows and movies in the history of show business. Among them are works such as Rhapsody in Blue, Someone to Watch Over Me, 'S Wonderful and Summertime. Today their artistic legacy is as popular as ever: Porgy and Bess has enjoyed a recent Broadway revival, and a there's also a "new" Broadway show, Nice Work If You Can Get It - the shows have garnered 10 nominations each for the TONY Awards. MusicFest Vancouver is pleased to present the Canadian premiere of Here to Stay: The Gershwin Experience as our Odlum Brown Opening Gala Concert.

Summertime, Sylvia McNair
Summertime, Sylvia McNair
Why am I excited? Start with a pianist deemed by many as the foremost interpreter of Gershwin's compositions; add a Grammy-winning vocalist whose career has stretched from the Salzburg Festival to New York's Rainbow Room; include a "song and dance man" in the tradition of Gene Kelly; and feature family photos, art work, films and other visual elements in a multimedia orchestral show that delivers an insider's view of the creative lives of these iconic musicians. Incredibly, this summer marks the 75th anniversary of George Gershwin's untimely death at the age of 38, but our love of his music is Here to Stay. Join in the celebration!

Here to Stay: The Gershwin Experience is produced by Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich of Premiere Media and Kevin Cole. Todd Gershwin is the great nephew of George and Ira Gershwin, the grandson of their younger brother Arthur and a trustee of the estates of George and Ira Gershwin.

Matthew Baird, Program Director, MusicFest Vancouver

"When Cole sits down at the piano, you would swear Gershwin himself was at work...Cole stands as the best Gershwin pianist in America today."

to buying tickets at the lowest possible price

Every time you turn around you're paying more than you thought you'd have to. That one filling you needed? Now you need braces. The $99 deal on a flight to Edmonton? Don't forget about the $537 in taxes! Need to take public transit to the airport? Who knows how much you'll pay.

I know it drives me crazy so I wanted to share with you some tips to saving a few bucks and avoiding those unexpected extra fees.

1. Go in a group! To most events at MusicFest Vancouver, if you get a gang of 10 together, you get 20% off. That's a whole lot of lattes.

2. Purchase in-person. Remember when we use to do things face to face? Well now it actually saves you money. (Pssssssssssssst.... The Chan Centre doesn't charge the ticket agency service charge if you purchase in-person at their venue.)

3. Purchase in advance. Feel mildly self-righteous passing those folks lined up to purchase at the door with your tickets in hand because you knew that the prices went up at the door. (**cough cough..... World at the Garden: New York Voices...cough cough**)

4. Print Your Own Tickets. All concerts at the Orpheum, the Vancouver Playhouse, the Chan Centre, the Vogue and VanDusen Botanical Garden have the option for you to print your own tickets. I would suggest doing this because:

A) you don't have to pay to have them mailed

B) you don't have to stand in that will call line up

and C) you'll look modern and tech savvy when they scan your ticket at the door. Oooooo La La!

5. Become a MusicFest Vancouver FaceBook fan! Just in case, you know, we do things like offer our fans special deals and discounts..... juuuuuuuuuuust in case.

Each issue of our newsletter will introduce a MusicFest Vancouver staff member who will share what concert they can't wait to hear.  Ross Powell, our Production Manager since 2000, can't wait to hear La Bottine Souriante. Ross says:

"As Programmer of CelticFest Vancouver I have tried to get La Bottine Souriante to that festival, but what with various calendar issues and such it just never happened.

Far from feeling scooped, I am hugely pleased that my other favorite festival, MusicFest Vancouver, has managed to secure a date with this very fine band.

You will not find a more exciting traditional Celtic act from either side of the water. Ten, count, 'em, ten of the world's finest artists on stage together, kicking Acadian Celtic butt! Wow! I can't wait."
