Regional News
it is like just yesterday...
|
2o years.... if you say it fast, it doesn't really seem to be that long. 1990 was the date of my first class with a Grade 10 class in Beaverlodge, Alberta. I remember trembling in my boots as I walked into class to present a Project Business program to 32 students. The feelings dissipated as I got into the program, feeling strongly that what I was offering them were some important life skills that so often get missed or found out the hard way. It was those feelings, that maybe in some small way I was making a difference to the lives of children, that has kept me so determined to have Junior Achievement as a part of as many young persons lives as possible.
I believe in the skills and information that the JA programs offer and sharing that information with those who hold tomorrow's future in their hands. The initial fear of walking into a class has reduced to nervousness but still fades quickly as I see the desire to learn and willingness to absorb the key messages of the programs in the eyes of the students. 20 years... for the young just receiving their first program, having not seen what 20 years is like yet, it seems like eternity, but for me, it is like just yesterday... and here's to the next 20.

JA Veterans Robert Manolson
|
Meet Robert Manolson, an inspiring JA volunteer veteran. Robert is the Creator & Facilitator at Powerful Play Experiences (www.powerfulplay.ca). According to recent research, 100% of Edmonton employees surveyed stated that we can all use more fun at work. Powerful Play Experiences is in the business of "Fun at Work". Robert designs customized team building workshops, staff retreats and conference breakout sessions that sets the tone to increase fun levels back in the workplace. After all, isn't it really all about a smile on everyone's faces at the end of the work day?
When Robert isn't working or volunteering with JA, he enjoys spending time with his wife by visiting Edmonton's finest restaurants and playing with their dear car Smooshie! They also try to get away to their favorite retreat in Alberta- Jasper.
Q. How did you hear about Junior Achievement?
Junior Achievement has always had a long and successful history when it comes to making a difference in the lives of today's youth. Being that my career has always included some form of work with today's youth, Junior Achievement was always on my radar screen and I believed that it was important to align myself to the great work that is Junior Achievement.
Q. Why do you feel the JA Programs are important for students?
As a Certified Career Counselor who provides one-to-one career counseling and support to youth of all ages, in my professional opinion, Junior Achievement is a leader in our community. JA delivers...not only in WHAT services it provides, but HOW!
Q. How long have you volunteered with JA for?
I believe that I'm heading into my 4th year as a JA Volunteer. My JA Volunteer experience is one of the most consistent experiences that have occurred in my ever changing career and life over the past several years. Thank you JA.
Q. What keeps you coming back year after year?
What keeps me coming back? All the free food that is provided over the school lunch hour to all the amazing volunteers!! Plus, JA truly has a handle on how to acknowledge and appreciate their volunteers. Oh yes, I'm also passionate about making a difference in the career choices of today's youth and JA gives me that experience.
Q. Do you feel this is a good way to 'give back to the community'?
JA is one of many opportunities available to give back to the community. If you know of someone who has a personal need and desire to do so, have them call Kelsey or Javier immediately. Don't delay!!

Tips & Games
|
Hello to all of our wonderful volunteers. I hope the New Year is seeing you well. This month, my tips and trick talk about the activities mentioned in the JA programs. Here are a few helpful hints that will take your program from great to fantastic!
1) Practice the games and activities with some friends. Any questions that they may have might come up in the class. This is great way to prepare yourself.
2) Practice, Practice, Practice. The more you know about the activity, the more prepared you will be.
3) Have an example ready if the activity allows for one.
4) Integrate props whenever possible. Students will learn better if they can visually see something.
