The Bateys
BateyLast week, I went to a place near the Haitian border. It was in the southwest corner of the Dominican Republic, 30 minutes from Barajona.  The name of the area is called "The Bateys" (meaning 'camps').  There are 14 Bateys and they were built by the Dominican government many years ago.  These camps were developed to house Haitian slaves who worked in the sugar can fields.

These slaves had (and still have) very hard lives. They work from about 5am-5pm (sometimes later if there's light) harvesting, planting, and maintaining the sugar cane crops. At night, when they return to their Batey (which is located in the middle of the sugar cane fields and miles from the nearest town), they suffer with no electricity or running water. Their houses are nothing more than shacks, built of scrap wood. The "hard working" slaves get to sleep in concert bunkers that look like jail cells. These bunkers have nothing in them and the floors are usually wet and stink. There are no sewers in the Bateys, so people dig a hole in the field and use that as their toilet.

batey1Eventually the Dominican government outlawed slavery. This made the sugar cane landowners very angry because they were now forced to pay the Haitian workers. As a result, the landowners began paying the Haitian workers less than a dollar a day (this continues today). So, according to the law, the Haitians are now "paid employees", however in reality they are still slaves. Most people are born, live, and die without ever leaving their Batey and the sugar cane field they work in each day. Most Haitians living in the Bateys have no education, dreams, or knowledge of the rest of the world.

In The Spotlght...Patricia Gonzalez!
With the As I build relationships with the people of the Dominican Republic, there are certain stories that stand out. One (among many) of these stories is told by a woman named Patricia.

Patricia GonzalezI've had the pleasure of getting to know Patricia over the past several weeks. She can be found walking through the neighborhood and her children are often playing outside my apartment. After many days of walking past her and simply saying "hi", I finally dediced to strike a conversation with her. Eventually, we became friends (she knows many of the American missionaries with G.O. Ministries) and she shared her story with me.

Patricia's story is an excellent example of hope and what perseverance. She knew that she couldn't make ends meet on her own, but trusted that God will provide and never gave up. When you see Patricia's smile, you know that she feels a sense of peace and accomplishment. We should all learn from Patricia and NEVER GIVE UP...God has a plan!

So What's Berman Up To?
Let me just start by saying... A LOT!  Thanks to the generous partnership and support from all of you, we've had some amazing opportunities to encourage and provide hope for several communities in the Dominican Republic.

Building Relationships
I've partnered with a Dominican national named Isaias Gabriel.  Together our mission is to reach youth in the community of Hoya del Camito (the neighborhood where I live) with love and the word of Christ.  With very little money, these young adults spend most of their time on the streets.  Often teen pregnancy and drugs consume their time.

Isaias had a vision to offer alternative activities to the youth and has given them new Christian friends to spend time with.  Each week the youth group (ages 15-22) meet to discuss issues and learn about the bible.  The group also enjoys watching movies, playing American football (we just started a weekly league), and hiking in the mountains.

Team FacilitationTeam
The main focus of G.O. Ministries is to build a bridge and facilitate partnerships between Americans and Dominican nationals.  Through these partnerships, we hope that Americans can offer encouragement and financial resources to help the Dominican nationals become stronger leaders in their community.

The main tool that G.O. Ministries uses to introduce Americans to Dominican nationals are short-term mission adventure trips to the Dominican Republic.  These 8-day trips offer a range of activities and gives each participant a first hand experience of Dominican life and culture.

As a missionary with G.O. Ministries, I help to facilitate these short-term teams; offering a safe, informative, and exciting trip!  Currently, there are 50 teams scheduled for 2008.

bermanConstruction
There are currently 6 construction projects underway here in the Dominican Republic.  I have the opportunity to introduce American short-term teams to construction projects around the island.  Together we work side-by-side with Dominican nationals.

Typical work consists of moving block, chiseling concert, shoveling dirt, mixing cement, or anything else that's needed.
