Govinda Al Re
5,000 years ago Child Krishna exhibited His mischievious nature by organizing his friends into a human pyramid, so He could crawl up on their shoulders, reach and break the suspended pots of yogurt and other sweets. He and his friends would then enjoy the spoils. It's a tradition at Janmastmi to re-enact this pastime. We call for 15-20 athletic men and women volunteers (Indian and westerners alike) to build the human pyramid and break the pot. This is a great fun event and not at all risky. If and when the human pyramid collapses there are lots of soft bodies to collapse onto.

This event, called 'Govinda Al Re', or 'Dahi Hundi,' is scheduled for 9 pm, Saturday September 2. For more details and to volunteer, contact Piyush: piyush_vaghela@hotmail.com

Humor Yogi Joke

Three yogis are performing a meditative vigil in a cave high in the Himalayas. One day there is a sound outside of the cave. Six months later one of the yogis says, "that was a tiger."
The cave is silent once again. About a year later, another yogi says, "that
wasn't a tiger it was a lion."
Again the cave falls silent. About two years later the third yogi says, "If
you two don't stop arguing I'm leaving."

Janmastami Festivities Krishna's Birthday Party

The Krishna Temple at 8628 S Main St.
in Spanish Fork has planned a transcendental birthday party for Sunday
September 2nd. to celebrate The Appearance Day of Shree Krishna. From 8
pm there will be Indian dance, drama, musical concerts, hot meals,
exhibits, and gifts available to all.
This holiday for Hindus compares
to Christmas Day. Five thousand years ago Shree Krishna appeared on
earth to protect the pious, annihilate the miscreants, and reestablish
the principles of virtue. This was accomplished in a span of 125 years
even at the end of which the Lord appeared as a fresh blooming youth of
16 or 20 years. Before returning to His own spiritual abode, the Lord
spoke the Bhagavad Gita (Song of God) to his friend and disciple,
Arjuna, thus leaving behind Him a legacy of wisdom for the ages. So
stimulating and profound are these words of Shree Krishna that there
have been over 800 translations of Bhagavad Gita in the English
language alone.
The word "Krishna", means
"All-Attractive" in Sanskrit. Krishna, in his manifest pastimes,
exhibited six principle attractive qualities in full: beauty,
knowledge, fame, wealth, strength, and humility. No other incarnation
of Godhead exhibited these qualities to the same degree, and therefore
Krishna is worshiped throughout India as "The Supreme Personality of
Godhead." Devotees chant His Holy Names considering that the names of
the Absolute are non different from the Absolute Himself. Aside from
the ubiquitous chanting there will be many other elements to celebrate
His advent on September 2nd.
Admission to this event is free to
the public. Everyone is welcome. For more information contact Caru or
Vai (801) 798-3559/787-1510.
Programs from 8 pm.
Menu of Events:
1) Musical pageant of Krishna's Birth (includes Vasudev, Devaki, Kamsa, Putana, Narada, etc.)
2) Dances by Ganesh Easwar from Los Angeles, Director of Om Linga Dance and Music Academy
Easwer, Ganesh, a resident of Los Angeles, California, is the first
male disciple of the late guru Sri. Rajarathnam Pillai.
In 1994 he completed the rigorous training and started performing and
teaching professionally.
Easwer
Ganesh and Pierre Vuerings founded the Om Linga Center in Los Angeles,
U.S.A. in 1999. Ganesh and the students of Om Linga have performed on many occasions in Los Angeles, U.S.A. and France from 1999 through
2006.
3) Govinda Ala Re:
As Krishna did when a child, participants will climb on each other's
shoulders to reach a break a high suspended pot full of butter and
yogurt. Call (801) 787-1510 to sign up.
5) Rathayatra around temple verandah with hand carved Ratha (Chariot)
5) Abhishekam (Bathing Ceremony). Sponsors will assist the priest in bathing the Deity, and take home the kalashas along with other gifts.
6) Kirtans and Bhajans
7) Midnight arati
8) Huge feast (everyone is welcome to bring preparations to augment the feast) sold up until the midnight arati and served free afterwards.
The kalasha abhishekam (bathing
ceremony) will take place about 10:30 pm. We'd like to thank the fifty
families who participated last year, and all those who have been
regularly supportive over the years.
This year we were hoping for new members, or heretofore marginally
supportive ones, to step up to the plate, and to double the number of
kalasha sponsors. In expectation, we ordered 100 kalashas from
Vrndavan, India.
For anyone who cannot be present to personally bathe the deities,
we shall do the bathing in your name and send the kalasha and other
gifts by post. To see and hear the festivities (except when we are
doing the ratha yatra and the breaking of the butter pot outside) one
can go to this web site, and click both the buttons for temple web cam
and the radio buttons for live audio.
For sponsorship and to receive either the deluxe kalasha for a
donation of $ 301.00 or the golden kalasha (silver after they are gone)
for $ 151.00, contact Caru Das at (801) 787-1510.

Preaching at the Llama Fest
Around 3,000 people attended the 13th Annual Llama Fest in Spanish Fork
Utah. Below are three links to local newspaper articles on the event.
Four television stations either gave pre event coverage or were present
on the day.
Originally, the festival held at the Hare Krishna Temple in Spanish
Fork was conceived simply as a fund raiser and community relations
effort. Tongue in cheek, to prove devotees could go a whole day without
proselytizing. However, visitors followed the devotees around asking so
many philosophical questions they were impeded from the smooth
organization of the festival.
Some years ago Jai Krishna was designated to sit on an elevated seat in
the second floor temple room with a microphone, answering any and all
questions about Krishna Consciousness. "Of course, the most commonly
asked question was: "What do llamas have to do with your religion?"
Once that was cleared up ("nothing"), there were hundreds of other
inquiries.
The festival starts at 4 pm when the vanguard of attendees start
arriving. The entertainment and llama events conclude by 9 pm. Long
after the llama enthusiasts and majority of revellers have left the
premises and the downstairs gift store and buffet area have gone dark,
the die hard participants in the Q & A can be found up in the
temple room as late as 11 pm. Jai Krishna routinely speaks to a total
of 500 sincere inquirers an average of 6 - 7 straight hours, puncuating
his discourses with some kirtans on the harmonium.
A gratifying number of Gitas and other small books are purchased in the gift store.
Llama Fest is a great example of "less is more." Sometimes, when not
pushing the philosophy, people fall over each other to reach out and
grab it.
