Greetings!
Green Apple

USGBC Green Apple Day Of Service
is coming September 29th

Our message of healthy, sustainable schools for all is going global. Tens of thousands of people are preparing to come together on one day to improve schools and campuses across the country and around the world for our first annual Green Apple Day of Service in the communities where you are working. In doing so, you are not only helping us show that the places where we learn matter, you are also highlighting your organization as an international leader in this effort.

There are many ways that your organization can help show your support and spread our message. You can watch our new video, take a picture of a green apple and upload it on our website, or lead a service project. To start a service project, visit

mygreenapple.org or contact Robert Morici at rmorici@usgbc.org

There are more than 300 projects on the map for Sept. 29, with events registered on every continent. You have the opportunity to make sure your organization is a part of this movement, and to highlight the important work you are doing to create safe, comfortable and engaging learning places.

Sincerely,

Rachel Gutter

Director, Center for Green Schools

P.S.  Our focus in Indiana is on Water Conservation.  Build a rain barrel with an elementary class or plant a rain garden with a high school biology class. Have you ever completed a household water use audit -think of what our students can learn by taking the exercise to our community schools!

Farewell to Bill Barnard
Another change in leadership for our BOD bids farewell to Bill Barnard, past BOD Chair, and founding member currently providing BOD representation for the NE Branch.  We wish Bill a successful transition to the West Coast and applaud his role in bringing the USGBC here to Indiana.  Taking over for Bill and the NE Branch Representation on the BOD will be Andrew Avara.  We encourage our NE regional members to reach out and support Andrew in fullfilling the mission of the USGBC that Bill helped to bring here nearly a decade ago.  Thank you Bill for your years of service and may you build on sustainable solutions wherever you land.

Purdue Campus Addition Achieves LEED NC2.2 Silver

Purdue's Mechanical Engineering Building Takes on the LEED Rating System and Achieves Silver!

Purdue University Campus planners have integrated sustainability into campus planning and have achieved success using USGBC's LEED Rating System as both a guide and a standard for much of its new construction.  The Roger B. Gatewood Wing of the Mechanical Engineering School is the first of Purdue's LEED registered  construction projects to recieve LEED Silver certification.  The Project statistics include:

      • 42.7% Water Savings achieved based on previously set standards of practice
      • 38.2% energy savings achieved exceeding ASHRAE 90.1 requirements
      •  92.12% of all construction waste was diverted from local landfills in part due to Purdue's own campus recycling!

Atrium 1The project hit all of its targets made during an eco-charrette facilitated by Mindi Hanni owner and founder of Urban Design.  Urban Design continued to provide LEED consulting from the time of project registration in 2009 until 2010.  A2So4 Architecture assisted completing the LEED documentation through certification in 2011.  The project followed a well orchestrated timeline that accommodated student schedules and integrated the construction process into student life which included a respectful compliance with the campus's 'No Tobacco' policy Arched entry

A well integrated design team  collaboration with the construction team and material suppliers ensured the project's success.  Congratulations Purdue on your 1st LEED Silver Certification!
