Solar Lab Makes Debut in Indiana

Date: July 7th, 2011
GSA is using Recovery Act funds to install energy-saving solar technology at the Maj. Gen. Emmett J. Bean Federal Center in Indianapolis. The Bean Center is GSA's largest building in the Great Lakes Region and was cited as one of the "100 Recovery Act Projects that are Changing America" by Vice President Joe Biden. The installation of the solar panels on the building's roof will generate 1.8 megawatts of renewable energy. Approximately 5760 panels of the planned 6152 panel array have already been installed on the building. Approximately 392 panels are connected directly to the solar lab where the performance of four types of solar technology is being researched by GSA and the Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories.
This project will deliver reliable, objective data on which photovoltaic systems work best in the climate typical of the Midwest - hot, humid summers; cold winters; frequent cloud cover; and high precipitation. The three-year project is scheduled for completion in December 2013. The work will cost about $24 million and includes re-insulating, reinforcing, and replacing two-thirds (about 320,000 square feet) of the center's roof. The development will create 75 to 100 jobs and pump nearly $25 million into the economy.
As a GSA project, this data is public and will be shared in a usable format by
the DOE's/GSA to provide guidance to future Solar projects.

From the Chair
Has everyone been able to stay cool through this mid-summer heat? I think the relief is coming. Before we know it, the kids will be back in school, and fall will be here. August promises some great summer activities throughout the Chapter, from special, discounted continuing education sessions, to the Northeast Branch's annual golf outing in Ft. Wayne on August 22. I am personally looking forward to heading North for the event and teeing off with our Northeast Branch. Several other Board Members will also be hitting the greens, I hope to see you out there too!
One of the Chapter's main focuses continues to be on the Greening the Heartland 2012 conference. We are looking forward to hosting the event next year -you can save the date -May 16-18, 2012 but more importantly you can get involved NOW. In the coming months, we will be reaching out to potential sponsors and exhibitors. If you think you might want to take advantage of these opportunities to reach people on both a local and regional level, showing them your commitment to green buildings and sustainability, please do not hesitate to contact us. As the conference date gets closer we will really need additional volunteers to help with the planning and execution of the conference. There are several sub-committees already set up and starting to meet the need but they are just that -a start. They can use some additional support. As always, please feel free to contact me if you are interested.
Thank you!

Bowen Engineering Corporation Headquarters Indianapolis, Indiana Certified LEED Gold
Source: Bowen Offices
Date: August, 2011
The Bowen Engineering Corporation Headquarters now occupies a multi-storied formerly multi-tenant office building but only after a complete renovation to accommodate the new owners as its sole occupant. The move was directed to meet the spacial requirements of the growing business but the desire to certify the new facility under the LEED for Commercial Interiors rating system was initiated by 'Wanting to do the right thing" -Doug Bowen, President and CEO.

Preliminary planning between the owner and Interior Architect Mitsch Design along with LEED consultant Urban Design determined many of the project goals fit neatly into the rating system's credit checklist. The site was selected for its central location right on the Meridian corridor close to 465. The interior design focused on an open-concept floor plan, accented with industrial finishes and exposed structures. The design credits easily worked with plans to overhauling the HVAC system, install all low-flow plumbing fixtures, and reuse or install all energy star equipment.
The construction credits were where the LEED rating system shined on its own merit thanks to a very committed construction team led by Pepper Construction. More than 65% of construction waste was successfully diverted from landfills with significant savings to the construction budget. An ID credit was earned by removing the old ballasted roofing system and replacing it with a white Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) roof, the ballast was reused by Bowen on other projects.
As a result of these investments, the Bowen Engineering Corporation Headquarters achieved LEED Gold certification for 62,000 s.f. of Commercial Interior Space under LEED CI v2.0 the LEED for Commercial Interiors rating system from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Committees build opportunity for member volunteers
Schools will be back in session but the chapter committees have been meeting through the summer working hard to address a heavy agenda for membership communication strategies, sponsorship, and advocacy. Chapter programs rely on sponsorship and membership dues as well as volunteer activity. Advocacy for government support of sustainable strategies and representation in the development of the 2012 LEED Rating system also depend on member activity. Our chapter is growing and it is with the commitment of our members that we are assured of growing sustainably!
Our Chapter Mission is "To create a diverse coalition of building industry stakeholders within Indiana dedicated to the education about and promotion of sustainable design and the construction and operation of environmentally responsible places to live and work". How would you share our mission with others? Let us know! .
