Going Green is Pro-active Healthcare
Source: William Thomson, Green Homes Expert
Date: April 18, 2011
Patients admitted to a "green" healthcare services facility tend to heal faster and experience shorter stays, reports the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Research has shown that a facility that offers green healthcare services provides "a healthy indoor environmental quality" that connects patients to outdoors, according to Scot Horst, USGBC senior vice president of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Property Magazine reports the USGBC launched its new Green Building Rating System for LEED for Healthcare at the April 2011 CleanMed conference. The Council expects to provide guidance to the design and construction of both new buildings and those that may undergo renovations. The new green rating system will apply to inpatient, outpatient and licensed long-term care facilities; medical offices; assisted living facilities; and medical education and research centers. The new rating system marks the efforts put together by the USGBC and the Green Guide for Healthcare (GGHC), a project of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems and Health Care Without Harm. Immediately after its launch in 2007, the GGHC has drawn feedback that contributed in the creation of the new LEED for Healthcare rating system. The USGBC noted that a mammoth population of patients in one healthcare facility compromises the immune systems and increases sensitivity to chemicals and pollutants. The primary goals of LEED for Healthcare are aimed at fulfilling the 24-hour operational facility requirements, which include process water use related to medical equipment, rural facility locations, patient populations, and patient and staff health.

North Central Branch

The North Central Branch had its final spring program in May, a tour of the new Transpo Facility in South Bend, which is in the process of achieving LEED Platinum. The building uses the same amount of energy as its previous facility, even though the new facility is much larger. Due to the high level of sustainability of the building, employees have increased environmental awareness and have taken part in keeping the facility clean and green. The tour was very educational to all those that attended and the building serves as a model for future development in the City of South Bend.
The branch will take a break from hosting programs during the summer months, but will continue to work through the summer to develop new ideas to improve its impact next year. If you are interested in helping out with any planning efforts, please contact Mike Reese at mwr@troyergroup.com.

From the Chair As we move out of the rainy season, and into the warm weather, it is hard to believe that 2011 is almost halfway over. I think the Chapter has done some great things so far this year, with the main focus set on educational opportunities. We now have in place a rather robust collection of these programs to attain the GBCI required CMP hours to maintain your LEED AP accreditation - with several opportunities around the state each month. Please visit the Chapter website scroll to 'View all events' on the right column to find opportunities near you.
Our Chapter is already in motion to host the 2012 USGBC Heartland Regional Conference Greening the Heartland, (drawing from USGBC Chapters in our region's 12 state area). I know I can speak for the entire Board of Directors when I say that we are looking forward, with great anticipation, to this tremendous opportunity to welcome our regional partners to our State. We will be needing all hands on deck to ensure the success of Greening the Heartland as it is our honor to host this event. As always, feel free to contact me, I can put you in touch with a committee that best suits your talents. It is really great to see the concepts for the programming of the event starting to come together! With our thoughts focused toward Greening the Heartland in 2012, please give serious consideration to attending the conference this year, being held by our neighbors to the southeast in Cincinnati. The importance of regional networking along with the opportunity to gain insight into regional strategies for LEED education and advocay can be best discovered when you support this event. Mark your calendar - June 22 to June 24, 2011. Further information (including a link to registration) is available below. I will be in attendance and I hope to see you there! Thank you - enjoy the start of Summer! John O'Brien 2011 USGBC Indiana Chair jpobrien@heapy.com |

June LEED Project Highlight

IUSB Community Building
Achieves LEED Silver
Indiana University South Bend held a LEED Silver Certification ceremony for the Community Building on the River Crossing Campus Apartments site on May 19 at 2:00 pm. The community building achieved this award for incorporating a design and construction that reduces energy use, provides natural lighting, reduces water usage, used appropriate material, provided a clean indoor environment as well as a variety of other sustainable strategies including:
- Access to Public Transportation, bicycling and pedestrian accessibility
- 62% of green space planted with native and adaptive species to help
decrease maintenance needs and reduce irrigation by over 83%. - 54% Reduction of potable water use by installing dual flush toilets, waterless urinals and low flow fixtures.
- 19.2% reduction in Building Energy Costs by using a closed-loop geothermal heating and cooling system.
- Diverted over 90% or 35 tons of construction waste from our landfills
- Over 90% of occupied spaces harvest natural daylighting through perimeter windows and cupola.
- Use of materials with Recycled content and Low-VOC content for indoor health
The innovative design and construction process for this facility was a collaboration between IU South Bend, Indiana University Architect's Office, The Troyer Group, Inc., Sterling Group Inc., and TechComm, Inc. The campus Sustainability Committee comprised of faculty members also played an important role in the project and set the stage for a green movement on campus. The IU South Bend Center for a Sustainable Future, headed by Mike Keen, has since been established and is helping lead sustainability efforts in the community.
All of this was made possible through creative efforts of the design and construction team with no increased cost in the budget. Bill Barnard, LEED Administrator and USGBC Indiana Board Member, noted "this facility truly exhibits IU South Bend's goal of 'Affordable Excellence'. Today we are presenting this award in recognition of Indiana University South Bend's campus commitment to sustainability through this project." John O'Brien, USGBC Indiana Chapter Chair, also attended and presented the Chancellor with the LEED Silver Plaque.
The Community Building is at the center of IU South Bend's River Crossing Campus Apartments complex which includes accommodations for up to 400 students. The Community Building was recognized for its design by American School & University Magazine.
Congratulations on establishing The IU South Bend Center for a Sustainable Future and for your achievment of LEED Silver

LEED Regionalization
USGBC, in collaboration with its chapters, is recruiting volunteers for regionalization. Regionalization is the process by which chapter-level volunteers identify priority environmental issues in their areas and the LEED credits that address those issues. These credits are known as Regional Priority credits that, when earned by a project, reward one bonus point per credit. Chapter volunteers will be selecting Regional Priority credits for LEED 2012.
Each chapter will gather a task force that is composed of local professionals (both chapter members and those interested in becoming members). USGBC intends for chapter task forces to be as diverse and as large as possible, drawing from various areas of expertise and professions.
