Arminda J Hanni 1960 - 2011
The United States Green Building Council awarded Indiana its chapter charter in 2007 under the leadership of Arminda J. Hanni. 'Mindy' our friend and colleague reached the end of a long and reluctant journey April 20th 2011. Her presence at our gatherings has been sorely missed. Hope for her return now becomes honor of her life, a life that was unique and extraordinary and cannot be sufficiently honored by words alone. We recognize her for her fearless ability to take on the big challenges, and her patient manner that kept everyone focused. She inspired others to follow her lead in exceeding expectations when taking on a task. For fellow volunteers that meant giving more than just due diligence and finding greater satisfaction in what we as a chapter could and can accomplish.
The diversity of our chapter can be attributed in part to Mindy's work as a volunteer exemplifying her ability to engage others in chapter efforts regardless of their background. Mindy's commitment to this chapter was as strong as her commitment to improve the standard of care in the design and construction field. As a founding chapter member, she was already applying the LEED rating system on a registered project here in Indianapolis while other founding members, me included, were just beginning to study for the LEED A.P. exam.
Responding to the demands for LEED assistance, Mindy's WBE firm, Urban Design, transitioned into the first LEED Consulting firm in Indiana in 2007. Seeing the need for impartial guidance, she stepped away from the design process by only a few paces stepping seamlessly into the role of LEED Consultant. She had already combined her extensive 20+ years of knowledge as a licensed architect, certified construction specifier and document technician, with LEED Accredited Professional status in 2003. Working easily with designers and engineers, owners and contractors towards more collaborative design and construction practices, she has served our community fearlessly ensuring a certification process that took pride in being both efficient and 'as pain free as possible'.
Mindy's enthusiasm for life has been contagious and is evident in those of us who now share in the vision she so boldly supported. We take this opportunity to recognize her most recent accomplishments as a leader, business owner, mentor, and engaged volunteer, not to impress us so much with what she did as that was not her way, but to impress upon us what can be done when we, each one of us believe enough in both ourselves and those around us to change the world and still protect its future, one state, one city, and one building at a time.

| From the Chair
I'd like to begin by echoing that Mindy Hanni was truly dedicated to the success of this Chapter. She had a big impact on me personally when I first became involved with the Chapter. She will be sorely missed. As the Chapter and its Branches continue to grow, we honor her memory and her vision that helped bring the USGBC to Indiana. We appreciate the interest that has been shown in helping to plan for Greening the Heartland 2012. There have been a few new faces at the steering committee meetings.
If you are unfamiliar with Greening the Heartland, this is a regional conference, the size of which is second only to Greenbuild. Last year, after a rigorous selection process, Indiana was given the go-ahead to host the event in 2012 by the Heartland Regional Council, made up of representatives from each Chapter in the Heartland's 12 state area. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to show off our State. To pull this off, our Chapter, as a statewide organization, needs the full participation of all its Branches. We will be needing all hands on deck to ensure the success of Greening the Heartland as it is our honor to host this event. As always, feel free to contact me, and I'll put you in touch with the committee. There continue to be more and more educational opportunities hosted by the Chapter to obtain GBCI approved, LEED-Specific credit to maintain your LEED AP accreditation. These opportunities are occurring in each Branch around the state. When you visit the Chapter website scroll to 'View all events' on the right column to find opportunities near you. Thank you - enjoy the month of May! John O'Brien 2011 USGBC Indiana Chair jpobrien@heapy.com |

Indiana Green Building News
Indiana University -Making it easy for students to have a voice
Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington students voiced their opinion in favor of creating a Sustainability Fund for the promotion of 'green' initiatives and projects on campus. With the help of the Student Sustainability Council and its 18 member organizations, 11,266 students signed a petition for the establishment of the fund, which will be supplied by a voluntary $5 fee offered during course registration.
The sustainability council, with support from the Indiana University Student Association, pioneered the use of an online petition to collect signatures. Permission to use the online tool required the approval of Dean of Students Harold "Pete" Goldsmith, the Office of the Registrar and University Information Technology Services. After its successful first run, this new, efficient, and democratic instrument will soon be extended to other university activities. Students can choose to donate to the fund when course registration opens on April 4, 2011; and the option to donate will be available every subsequent registration period. The sustainability council will begin allocating fund proceeds during the fall 2011 semester. The Student Sustainability Council is made up of representatives from both undergraduate and graduate student organizations and student government bodies. It was created during the fall 2009 semester in an effort to promote communication and collaboration among organizations interested in advancing environmentalism and sustainability at IU Bloomington. The group's central objectives are to advise the IU Office of Sustainability from the students' perspectives, to help to reduce the negative effects of the university on the natural environment, to promote social and economic justice, and to engage the IU student body in issues of sustainability.
