| From the Chair
Last month I mentioned the interesting weather that we get here in Indiana, and, as we move from ice and snow to rain, it is good to see that spring is right around the corner.
The Chapter is still in a financial rebuilding mode after a difficult economy in 2010. To that end, the Board has found it necessary to redirect necessary resources from what was to be this year's Indiana Building Green Symposium (IBGS) to Greening the Heartland 2012. Canceling the IBGS was a difficult decision. We have taken into account the very large amount of work already invested in the planning of IBGS 2011 and hope to use these efforts to ensure a solid foundation for the organization of GTH 2012.
The IBGS Steering Committee is an exceptional group of volunteers and their ability to roll their efforts into the planning of GTH 2012 reflects the chapter's ability to ramp up our commitment to quality programming presented within a sustainable budget.
The entire USGBC Indiana Board of Directors is very appreciative of the IBGS Steering Committee effort and is encouraged that although the focus of the committee is being redirected to 2012 we have tremendous confidence in the shift and in the Chapter's ability to host Greening the Heartland (GTH) next year.
Greening the Heartland is an annual conference for the entire Heartland Region of the USGBC. Our region extends to a 12 state boundary making it the largest region in the nation. Our Chapter was selected to hold this conference for 2012 after a rigorous submittal process last year. The Board is 100% committed to making this a successful conference. Please consider joining the growing number of volunteers for this regional event and be a part of making it happen!
Remember to keep an eye out for the Chapter's educational opportunities. Obtain GBCI approved, LEED-Specific credit to maintain your LEED AP accreditation.
The Chapter and its Branches continue to search for key volunteers motivated to support our committees for membership and advocacy. Volunteers have the ability to make a real difference in their community and our state at large. Please reach out to me, any of the USGBC-Indiana Board, or your Branch leadership if you would like to be more involved.
Thank you!

The Nature Conservancy Offering Educational Assistance for Two-Stage Ditch
Innovative Ditch Can Help Improve Water Quality in Wabash River Watershed
WINAMAC, INDIANA - February 2011 - The Nature Conservancy has received funding from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to promote the usage of the innovative Two-Stage Ditch design in the Wabash River watershed. The Conservancy hopes to establish the Two-Stage Ditch as a readily accepted and widely implemented practice in the watershed.
"The Nature Conservancy believes that wide-scale implementation of the 2-Stage Ditch can be part of a viable long-term solution to benefit local and state-wide water quality," said Kent Wamsley, project director for the Conservancy's Wabash Rivers Initiative. "And this IDEM grant will help us educate and promote the 2-Stage Ditch."
This education and outreach effort will be undertaken state-wide. The Conservancy will host workshops, presentations, and field days targeting county surveyors, watershed managers and private landowners to increase general understanding of Two-Stage practices. These gatherings will provide information including design, construction, construction and maintenance costs, and ecological performance of Two-Stage Ditches. The Conservancy hopes that these outreach efforts will increase interest in the practice, translating to implementation in the future.
The long-term outcome would be that these ditches are part of an integrated solution that positively impacts water quality and aquatic habitat across the state.

March LEED Project Highlight

Indiana Tech - Seitz Center Renovation
Built in 1857, the Seitz Center preserves its historic significance as one of Fort Wayne's oldest buildings still used for its original purpose, education. LEED Gold Certified, the design maintained the exterior brick shell of the building, window openings, and door openings, while integrating a new structural floor and roof system. With the use of the LEED waste from Green Building Rating System, the project preserved natural resources, utilized regional and recycled content materials, diverted over 80% of the construction waste from the landfill, and conserved natural resources with energy efficient geothermal mechanical systems, low flow fixtures, and 98% LED light fixtures throughout the building. This new building is over 65% more efficient than before the renovation.

Share what you know-and know you've made a difference
Cities, towns, and university campuses across the state have either established or are formulating a protocol for sustainable growth. You do not have to be a member of the United States Green Building Council to see the need for change in how we impact our natural environment with what and how we are building, let alone how fast we can build, even in these hard economic times. The resources and guidance offered by USGBC and our local chapter membership has led many of these efforts at the grass roots level using the LEED rating system.
The guidelines within each LEED rating system has become the backbone of change from how our jobsites are managed to how or if our buildings use energy efficiently. Our design teams and construction crews are much further along on the learning curve than a year ago and best practices are making that curve more and more shallow on the road to a more collaborative effort from drawing to built environment. If you have been involved or are involved in a LEED project and have experienced the impact of the LEED rating system in action your fellow members can benefit from your successes and failures.
The Communications Committee at both the Chapter and Branch levels have established several forums to chose from to share your LEED experiences. Depending on how detailed you need to be, you can chose from our social media sites for open discussions or submit a letter or article to this newsletter, or for a larger audience the Programs Committees can be accessed for scheduling a more formal venue when tours or panel discussions offer the best opportunity to share. Take advantage of the chapter communications network, it is the greatest asset your membership can offer. We are here to support you in your efforts to achieve sustainable progress in our community.
