Innovation Park, Notre Dame's start-up incubator for transforming innovations into viable marketplace ventures, has earned LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 55,000 square foot building, opened in October 2009 and designed to encourage creativity and collaboration, was also built to rigorous standards that promote energy and water efficiency and reduce waste.

"Innovation Park is intended to foster cutting-edge ideas and technologies," said Heather Christophersen, Director of Sustainability. "LEED design and construction fits right in with this culture of innovation by encouraging continuous improvement in green building."

Ian Hadden P.E. LEED AP BD+C, the Energy & Sustainability Manager at Fanning Howey, will share his interests and expertise at our February monthly program meeting.  He will be sharing information on how energy analysis and modeling can be incorporated into the design process using tools such as Target Finder and eQuest for new construction projects.  With the current focus on utility costs for many existing buildings, energy modeling can also be used to help building owners understand how they are using energy today and modify their facility and/or operations. Ian will also provide a short review of the LEED 2009 EAc1 documentation.

From the Chair

I hope everyone has been able to dig (or chip; or possibly chisel) their way out of the recent winter storms.  Indiana definitely gives us some interesting weather throughout any given year.

I'd like to make sure that everyone is aware of the GBCI's Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) requirements for LEED APs (you can find more information about these at gbci.org/cmp). As mentioned in last month's newsletter, the Chapter is now providing new educational opportunities for our membership that will help all of the LEED APs maintain their accreditation with GBCI approved credits.  The Central Branch has already hosted one of these events, and more will follow around the state.  Please keep an eye out for these excellent opportunities to obtain LEED-Specific credit.

A few weeks ago, the Chapter's Board of Directors met for an all-day retreat to bring focus to the efforts needed in 2011.  I'd like to thank all of the Board Members, especially those who traveled from the remote corners of Indiana to attend.  I'd like to announce our 2011 Officers:

John O'Brien (Chair),

Dan Overbey (Vice-Chair),

Landon Chapman (Secretary),

Ted Mendoza (Treasurer),

Mac Williams ( Executive Director -now a volunteer position).

The Chapter and its Branches continue to search for key volunteers motivated to support our committees for education, membership and advocacy. Volunteers have the ability to make a real difference in their community and our state at large. Please reach out to me, any of the USGBC-Indiana Board, or your Branch leadership if you would like to be more involved.

Thank you!

LEED V3 Rating System Project Registration Revisions Clarify Ownership Accountability

Title: Revisions to the Agreements Governing the Use of LEED Online v3 and Participation in the LEED Certification Program
Author:
Source: USGBC website Press Release
Date Written: 1/21/2011

USGBC and GBCI today announced the release of revised agreements that are now available in LEED Online.  These agreements were revised to provide an enhanced level of legal guidance for the leadership organizations that pursue the benefits that accompany LEED certification.

USGBC and GBCI proactively sought the opinion of a wide range of legal counsel from architectural member firms, from GSA, and from others who practice construction law, many of whom are part of an informal USGBC legal working group.  Revised language has now been incorporated into the Terms and Conditions for the Use of LEED Online Version 3, the LEED Project Registration Agreement and the LEED Project Certification Agreement.

Perhaps the most significant of these is the creation of an agency form for design team members to use to show an agency relationship between themselves and the project owner.  The form allows the project's owner to appoint the design professional to sign the agreements only as the owner's representative, thus relieving the design professional and his firm from obligations undertaken by the owner under the agreements. Use of this form removes certain obligations from the project team, such as reporting requirements associated with LEED's Minimum Performance Requirement 6, and assigns them to the owners who are better able to ensure compliance with such requirements.

...USGBC and GBCI are posting Frequently Asked Questions to provide further details on the new agreements. LEED users are reminded that these agreements contain terms and conditions that are legally binding on all parties, including USGBC and GBCI. As with any legal agreement, you are advised to read the terms thoroughly and to consult a lawyer as needed to review the protections and obligations they present.
Questions can be directed to GBCI via the Project Certification & Registration "contact" form.

Own Your Chapter -be involved, have a voice

If you attended your January Branch Membership program give us some feedback. All chapter programs and events are developed based on membership needs and input.  We are a growing volunteer organization and we need to hear from everyone.  This newsletter provides contact information to many chapter and branch committee members including myself.  These volunteers are ready to make your chapter membership a valuable tool in your efforts to bring sustainable practices to your business and personal development.

I attended the Central Indiana Branch presentation and received sound reinforcement for many of the practices used in LEED certification. The presentation was one of several webcasts being offered by USGBC as an economical and accessible means to obtain CMP credits.  This particular Webinar looked at Materials and Resources and offered a basic level of understanding for gaining those credits.  There were some good tips on working with contractors including tips on site organization techniques that encourage those on the learning curve to step up and get involved.  The audience may have been lured by the opportunity to earn CMP credits but the Q&A after the program opened up a wider range of discussion.

Please join us for our next Monthly Program.  You do not have to be a member to enjoy some of the chapter benefit-details can be found on our Chapter website 'Indiana events calendar' located on the right side of the page: http://www.usgbc-in.org/index.php
